영한 병렬자료에서 부정문의 긍정문으로의 번역 양상

국문 초록

이 논문은 영어 부정어 ‘no', 'not', 'never'이 포함된 영어 부정문이 한국어 긍정문으로 번역되는 양상을 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 『The Catcher in the Rye』, 『The Kite Runner』, 『Life of Pi』, 『River Boy』의 영어 소설과 한국어 번역본『호밀밭의 파수꾼』,『연을 쫓는 아이』, 『파이 이야기』,『리버보이』의 영한 병렬 자료에서 발췌한 자료를 대상으로 반의어와 유의어를 기준으로 나누어 번역되는 양상을 조사하였다. 먼저 반의어를 사용하여 긍정문으로 표현되는 경우를 주어의 의도 강조, 부정의 선택적 변조 차원에서 관점의 변화, 그리고 어휘의 단순화로 나누어 분석하였다. 첫째, 주어의 의도를 강조하기 위해 부정문이 긍정문으로 번역됨을 알 수 있었다. 이는 부정문에 내재된 모호함을 제거하고 화자의 의도를 분명하게 강조하여 드러내기 위해 긍정으로 나타낸 것이다. 이를 통해 메시지를 강조할 수 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 둘째, 부정의 선택적 변조를 통해 달라진 관점의 변화로 메시지를 강조하여 전달할 수 있음을 알 수 있었다. 동일한 메시지의 효과적인 전달을 위해 부정문의 반의어를 사용하여 긍정문으로 형태에 변화를 주는 선택적 변조가 사용되었다. 이러한 주어를 바꾸는 선택적 변조를 통해 달라진 관점의 변화를 반영하여 긍정으로 표현함으로써 메시지를 강조하여 전달할 수 있음을 확인하였다. 셋째, 어휘의 단순화는 복잡한 부정표현 대신 짧고 단순한 어휘의 긍정표현을 사용하여 의미적 등가를 이루는 것이다. 따라서 부정어가 삽입된 복잡한 원천텍스트를 번역에서는 단순한 긍정 어휘인 한 단어로 집약하여 메시지를 분명하게 전달함으로써 한국어 화자에게 더욱 자연스러운 한편, 메시지를 강조하여 전달하기 위해 긍정문으로 번역된 것이다. 다음으로 유의어를 사용해 긍정문으로 번역된 사례는 부정문을 수사의문문을 통해 긍정문으로 번역함으로써 비난이나 자조어린 감정 등의 암시적인 부정의 의미를 표면적인 긍정문에 함축함과 동시에 메시지를 강조할 수 있음을 알 수 있었다. 이와 같이 부정문의 반의어와 유의어를 사용해 부정을 긍정으로 번역하는 선택적 변조를 통해 도착어 독자의 빠른 이해를 돕고, 메시지를 강조하여 전달할 수 있음을 확인하였다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to examine the English-Korean translation phenomenon in which the English negative sentences including ‘no’, ‘not,’ and ‘never’ were translated into Korean positive sentences. The parallel sentences were extracted from both the English version and the translated Korean version of “The Catcher in the Rye”, “The Kite Runner”, “Life of Pi”, and “River Boy”. The translation of English negative sentences into Korean positive sentences was examined by dividing it into antonym and synonym. In the case of translation using antonym, the emphasis on the subject's intention, the change of perspective in terms of optional modulation of negatives, and the simplification of vocabulary were examined. First, it was found that the negative sentences were translated into positive sentences to emphasize the subject's intention. Second, through optional modulation of negation, the message can be emphasized by changing perspective. In order to effectively convey the same message, the form was changed to positives using the antonym of negative sentences through optional modulation. Third, the purpose of the simplification of vocabulary is to achieve semantic equivalence by using the short and simple positive expressions of vocabulary instead of complex negative expressions. Therefore, in Korean translation, the source text with the negator is aggregated into one simple positive word, and thereby the message is clearly expressed. Next, it was found that the message was emphasized by using the synonym of the negative sentence and making a positive rhetorical question. Through the rhetorical question, it was found that negative sentences could be translated into positive sentences to emphasize messages or contain negative meanings such as criticism or self-deprecation feelings in positive sentences. Therefore, these negative expressions are translated positively using antonym and synonym of negative sentences to help readers understand the text quickly by emphasizing the message.
