국문 초록

이 논문은 김명식의 ｢김익두의 미망을 논하고 기독교도의 각성을 촉(促)하노라｣(『신생활』 제6호) 발표 이후 기독교계와『신생활』 사이에서 오간 논전을 분석함으로써 1920년대 초 기독교와 사회주의의 분기의 과정에서『신생활』의 변곡점에 놓인 매체였음을 보이는 데 그 목적이 있다. Ⅱ장은 ｢김익두의 미망을…｣을 향한 반박과 김익두 옹호론을 독해하며 그 문제점을 짚어본다. 『기독신보』의 강제모와 김경하는 기독교의 특수성을 강조하면서 결과적으로 기독교 공동체 외부와의 소통을 기하는 글쓰기에 실패한다. 『매일신보』에 게재된 양하엽의 글은 당대 조선의 기독교계에 대한 비판적 성찰을 보여주었으나 이 성찰은 결국 김익두의 장점을 부각하기 위한 하나의 수단에 그친다. 김익두라는 상징적 인물을 옹호하는 데 주력한 이상의 논자들은 대안적 기독교 담론을 구성해내지 못한다. 이어지는 Ⅲ장에서는 이들의 논리가『신생활』에서 비판, 극복되는 과정을 검토한다. 최상현은 강제모의 글을 논리적으로 반박했을 뿐 아니라, 기독교계를 향한 비기독교인의 비판을 진보된 사회로 향하는 첫걸음으로 인식하고 사상운동의 일환으로서 토론을 독려한다. 유경상은 조선 기독교의 당파성, 사대주의를 비판하고 남녀평등, 평민주의, 노동주의 등이 현재 조선에 필요한 기독교의 진리라 주장한다. 박희도는 김익두를 제거되어야 할 ‘종양’에 비유하는데, 이는 김익두 개인과 조선 기독교 전체를 동일시하는 강제모, 김경하의 논리와 대별된다. 이들의 논의는 김익두 비판과 옹호라는 극단을 넘어 대안적 기독교 담론을 형성하고 있으며, 이때에 『신생활』은 이를 가능케 한 공론장으로 기능했다. 마지막장에서는『신생활』에서 사회주의적 색채가 강화되면서 기독교가 비판의 대상으로 전화하는 장면을 간략히 스케치한다. 이 논문은『신생활』이 대안적 기독교 담론의 지면이 되었음을 보임으로써 사회주의 잡지로 인식되었던『신생활』에 대한 새로운 독법을 제시한다는 점에서 그 의의를 찾을 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to illustrate that “New Life” was a medium placed at the inflection point during the divergence of socialism and Christianity. In addition, this work analyzes the controversy between the Christian community and “New Life” after the publication of Myung-sik Kim's “Discussing Kim Ik-doo's Delusion and Promoting a Christian Awakening” (“New Life” No. 6). Chapter Ⅱ reviews the rebuttal to “Kim Ik-doo's Delusion” and the defense of Kim Ik-doo of Christian Community, and points out the logical limits. In “The Christian Messenger,” Kang Jae-mo and Kim Kyeong-ha emphasized the specificity of Christianity and consequently failed to communicate with non-Christian communities. Yang Ha-yeop's writing in “Maeil Shinbo” critically reflected on the Korean Christianity of the day; however, this reflection ended up highlighting Kim Ik-doo's strengths. These three writers, who focused on defending the symbolic figure of Kim Ik-doo, failed to construct an alternative Christian discourse. Chapter Ⅲ examines the process of the argument being criticized and overcome in “New Life.” Choi Sang-hyun not only logically refuted Kang's writing, but also recognized non-Christians' criticism of Christianity as the first step toward a civilized society and encouraged discussion as part of an ideological movement. Yu Gyeong-sang criticized the partisanship and flunkeyism of Korean Christianity and argued that gender equality, the common people, and laborism were the Christian truths needed in Korea. Park Hee-do compared Kim Ik-du to a tumor that must be removed, which departed from the logic that identified Kim Ik-du with the entirety of Korean Christianity. Their discussion surpasses the narrow perspective of criticizing and defending Kim Ik-doo and formed an alternative Christian discourse; “New Life” functioned as a public sphere that made this possible. In the last chapter, as the socialist tone was strengthened in “New Life,” the scene where Christianity turned into a target of criticism was briefly sketched out. This thesis is significant because it suggests a new reading method for “New Life,” which was recognized as a socialist magazine, by illustrating that “New Life” became the site of an alternative Christian discourse.
