국문 초록

大東學會 임원진의 대다수는 일제강점기 보수유림을 친일화하는 부역에 종사하게 된다. 그런데 그 조짐이 이미 대한제국 말기에 시작되며, 이를 파악할 단서가 그 한문교육 활동에 있다. 대동학회 임원진은 근대 법학 전문지식인 양성 사립학교인 大東專門學校를 개설 운영한다. 특기할 점은 ‘한문’을 필수 교과로 특설하고 유림 자제를 대상으로 교육을 실시한다는 데 있다. 대동전문학교 초대 한문강사가 작성한 한문교육 관련 작품의 모음이 바로 ｢學校試士雜文｣이다. 이는 대동학회 한문교육 활동의 실상을 엿볼 수 있는 귀중한 자료이다. ｢학교시사잡문｣의 내용을 검토한 결과, 한문 교과를 통해 유림 자제의 유교 이념을 강화하는 교육이 주류를 이루고 있었다. 이는 유교문화권으로 대변되는 동아시아 연대를 위한 지도층 인재를 양성하고자 한 대동학회 임원진의 의도가 반영된 것으로 보인다. 이는 크게 두 가지 양상으로 나뉜다. 하나는 한문 교육의 명분 확보이고, 또 하나는 유교 이념의 체화와 실현이다. 한문 교육의 명분 확보의 경우 한문 중심의 교육 정책의 기반, 이른바 文以載道의 이념을 정당화하는 논리를 확보하기 위한 것으로, ‘漢文이라는 언어를 곧 儒道 실현의 단서’로 간주한 임원진의 견해가 반영된 것이다. 유교 이념의 체화와 실현의 경우 전통 道學의 진리 구현, 이른바 修己治人의 방식을 내면화ㆍ현실화하는 유교적 인재를 확보하기 위한 것으로, ‘지도자의 도덕 수양을 통한 사회 교화를 곧 통치 체제 확립의 관건’으로 간주한 임원진의 견해가 반영된 것이다. 즉 ‘유교 통치의 정당화가 곧 유림 계층의 정당화’로 귀결되는바 결국 유교 체제의 존속을 위한 것이라 할 수 있다. 이러한 대동학회 한문교육 활동의 보수성은 대한제국기 시대적 변화로 인한 보수유림의 위기감에서 촉발된 것으로 보인다. 그러므로 ｢학교시사잡문｣의 사례는 친일 보수유림의 견해가 당대 한치유ㆍ장지연ㆍ박은식ㆍ신채호 등 개신유학자의 견해와 어떠한 차이가 있는지 그 원인이 무엇인지 조명할 수 있는 사례라는 점에서 근대사적 의의가 있다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Great Eastern College is one of the significant activities of the Great Eastern Studies Association. ｢Curriculum Guide｣, included in 『Great Eastern Studies Association Magazine』, was written by Budangnoin, an instructor at the Great Eastern College, and describes the content of the school curriculum. It is material that can show specific facts. It will examine the details of the Great Eastern College and become a great help in understanding the view of the ruling class and the Great Eastern Studies Association, which had a tremendous political influence at the time on education, talent, world, and politics. As for the composition of the ｢Curriculum Guide｣, most of it incorporated traditional education (Chinese Classics and Taoism) into the modern school system, which is an extension of the Eastern Ideas Policy of the Great Eastern Studies Association. This includes formal, writing, and content education, such as ethics. The content is divided into beginner courses and advanced courses. This is closely related to traditional education. The beginner’s course is about learning the basics, such as improving writing and reading and learning how to study. Its goal is to secure the imperativeness in educating Chinese classics and the academic ability for the advanced course. The advanced course is divided into principles and applications. Principles it is about Confucian proprieties and the establishment of ethics. It is like the stage of ascetic practice in Taoism, which intends to secure the personal ethical view of the ruling class. For applications, it is about historical lessons and social reformation. It is like the stage of practicing Taoist ideas, which intends to establish social leadership for the ruling class. Such Eastern ideas-centered curriculum can be regarded as the manifestation of the crisis awareness of the established class, the Confucian scholars who wished to foster talented people to defend the Confucian system, the base of power.
