鄭瓜亭曲 創作背景과 그 時期에 대한 文獻的 考察

국문 초록

본고는 <정과정곡> 창작의 공간적 배경과 시간적 배경을 좀 더 명확히 밝히기 위해 작성된 것이다. <정과정곡>은 작자가 밝혀져 있는 유일한 고려속요이며 향가의 모습을 지니고 있기 때문에, 한국시가사상 매우 중요한 작품으로 주목받아 왔다. 이는 <정과정곡> 창작의 공간적, 시간적 배경을 명확하게 해야 한다는 의미이기도 하다. <정과정곡>은 정서의 동래 유배기에 지은 것이라는 것이 중론이다. 하지만, 근래에 정서가 거제도에 이배된 후 역시 거제도로 유배된 의종과 재회하면서 지은 것이라는 이른바 ‘거제도창작설’이 제기되어 논란이 되고 있다. 본고는 <정과정곡>과 관련 기록 그 자체에 기반해서 ‘거제도창작설’의 논리적 오류를 지적하고자 하였다. 본고에서는 <정과정곡>을 기록한 문헌들에 많이 등장하고 있는 문구인 ‘種瓜’ㆍ‘瓜亭’의 瓜가 갖는 전통문화에서의 상징성에 주목하여, 이것이 정서가 의종에게 조속한 해배를 요구하는 메시지라고 보았다. 다음으로 ‘召命不至’와 ‘撫琴作歌’ 사이에 있는 乃의 기능에 주목하였다. 그리고 ‘撫琴’과 ‘築亭’은 정서 자신이 최악의 유배지인 거제도로 이배되고, 친인척이 멸문지화 수준으로 내몰리는 상황에서 취할 행동이 아님을 밝혔다. 이어서 거제도에 유배된 의종 앞에서 자신의 해배를 간청하는 내용의 <정과정곡>을 ‘撫琴作歌’한다는 것은 상황 논리상 있을 수 없는 주장임을 간접적으로 밝히고자 하였다. 본고가 <정과정곡>의 창작배경과 시기를 둘러싼 의문을 해소하는데 도움이 될 수 있기를 기대한다.

영문 초록

This study is to clarify the spatial and temporal background of composing Song of Cheongkwajeong. Song of Cheongkwajeong has received attention as a very important work in the history of Korean poetic songs, because it was the only folk song in the Koryeo Dynasty and had a form of Hyang-ga. That means that the spatial and temporal background of composing Song of Cheongkwajeong should be confirmed. General opinion is that Song of Cheongkwajeong was composed during Cheong Seo’s exile in Dongrae. However, there was a controversy over a recent hypothesis of composing in Geoje-do, which suggested that Cheong Seo composed it when meeting the ousted and exiled king, Eu Jong, again in Geoje-do after he was deported there. This study is to contradict the hypothesis of Geoje-do. This study pays attention to ‘kwa’ meaning ‘cucumber’, of ‘chongkwa’, planting seeds of cucumber, and ‘Kwajeong’ meaning ‘Pavilion of Cucumber’, often shown in the documents recording Song of Cheongkwajeong, and shows that ‘kwa’ meaning ‘cucumber’, had some symbol in the traditional culture and also a message to plead with King Eu Jong for his release. It also deals with the function of ‘nae’ meaning ‘hereby’, between ‘no arrival of royal order to return’ and ‘composing songs with a kayageum’. In addition, it clarifies that ‘playing the kayageum’ and ‘building a pavilion’ were not appropriate for him under the circumstances that he was transferred to the worst exile, Geoje-do, and that his relatives were driven nearly to the extermination of whole family. Furthermore, the logical impossibility is inferred that he sang Song of Cheongkwajeong with a kayageum, pleading with the ousted and exiled king, Eu Jong, for his release. This study is expected to help solve some questions over the background and times of composing Song of Cheongkwajeong.
