국문 초록

<토지>에 나타난 ‘민족서사’의 구성방식을 살펴본 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, <토지>의 출발점은 집단정체성을 박탈당한 식민지인을 주요 인물로 삼아 그 위치에서 역설적으로 자기 집단정체성을 구성하고자 한다. 작품 내에서는 저항적 민족주의, 민족적 나르시시즘, 습관화된 애국심 등의 다양한 모습으로 나타난다. 나아가 일본제국주의도 극단적인 민족서사에서 비롯되는 힘의 논리임을 드러낸다. <토지>는 이와 같이 복잡한 민족-집단-전체주의의 구도를 개별 인물의 삶을 통해 구체적으로 형상화하고 있다. 둘째, <토지>의 ‘민족서사’는 민족-국가의 의미에 대해 질문-탐색하는 방식을 보여준다. 하층민의 경우, 이것이 대체로 신세한탄에 머무르는 한계도 있지만, 이동진이나 김한복의 경우 질문-탐색을 통해 삶이 변화한다. 이들의 변화과정은 선/악의 도덕이 아니라 윤리적 선택이며, 그를 통해 집단정체성을 구성하는 방식을 드러낸다. 결국 <토지>의 ‘민족서사’는 피해자 민족으로서의 나르시시즘을 넘어서서 보편적 인간의 이해를 도모하는 세계문학으로서의 소통가능성을 보여준다.

영문 초록

The national epic composition method in The Land is examined as follows. First, the start point of The Land paradoxically is the point where the colonized people, deprived of collective identity, tried to create their collective identity. In this work, efforts for recovering such collective identity appear in the diverse forms of resistant nationalism, national narcissism, and habituated patriotism. Furthermore, Japan's imperialism reveals the logics of power that comes from the extreme national epic. The Land specifically forms such complicated nation-group-totalitarianism composition through individual characters' lives. Second, the national epic of The Land shows the method of asking about and exploring the meaning of people－nation. For the lower-class people, such exploration is only limited to whining about their poverty and sufferings, but Lee Dong-jin or Kim Han-bok change their lives through the process of asking and exploration. Their changing course is not the morality of virtue/vice, but an ethical choice, and thus is a collective identity formation method. Eventually, the national epic of The Land surpasses the narcissism of the victimized, colonized people, and shows the possibility of communication as a world literary work which pursues universal human understanding.
