국문 초록

본 연구는 미국 추상표현주의 도예가인 켄 프라이스(Ken Price, 1935-2012) 작품에서 나타나는 에로티시즘을 확인하고 그것을 형성하는 작품 특징을 분석하는 데 목적을 두고 있다. 프라이스는 페인트를 도색한 유기체 형태의 작품으로 도자 조형의 영역을 확장하였다고 평가받는다. 1960년대 민권운동으로 미국 사회 전반에 급격한 변화가 발생하였고 기존의 성 인식을 전복하고자 하는 움직임이 일어났다. 프라이스는 이러한 경향이 두드러지던 로스엔젤레스(Los Angeles)에서 페루스 갤러리(Ferus Gallery)를 기반으로 활동하며 본격적으로 에로티시즘을 표현했다. 그의 에로티시즘은 작품의 유기체 형상, 구멍의 존재, 독특한 기법을 통한 색과 질감으로 구현되고 장기간에 걸친 형태와 기법 연구를 통해 발전한다. 본 연구에서는 프라이스의 에로티시즘의 특징과 형성 요인을 분석하기 위하여 에로티시즘의 정의와 미술에서의 에로티시즘 표현 변화를 조사하였다. 이를 바탕으로 프라이스의 작업 배경을 파악하고 그의 도자 조형 작품과 드로잉 작품의 형식적 특징을 분류하여 분석함으로써 프라이스의 에로티시즘을 고찰하였다. 프라이스는 추상화된 이미지와 그 상징들을 통해 인간의 성적 본능과 강렬한 생명성을 시각화한다. 그의 은유적이지만 감각적인 에로티시즘은 성 담론이 활발하게 일어나고 있는 현대 사회와 동시대 미술계에 에로티시즘 표현의 다양성을 환기한다는 점에서 탐구의 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

This study focuses on the eroticism in the works of Ken Price (1935-2012), an American abstract expressionist artist, and analyzes the characteristics of the works that form it. Price is considered to have expanded the area of ceramic sculpture with organic form of works painted with industrial paint. In the 1960s, the civil rights movement caused a rapid change in overall American society and a movement to overthrow existing gender perceptions occurred. Price was based on the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles, where this trend was prominent, and began to express eroticism. His eroticism is embodied in the organic form of the work, the presence of holes, and color and texture through his unique techniques. It develops through long-term studies of form and technique. In this study, in order to analyze the characteristics and factors of Price's eroticism, the definition of eroticism and the change in erotic expression in art were investigated. Based on this, Price's eroticism was examined by identifying the background of Price's work and classifying and analyzing the formal characteristics of his ceramic sculpture and drawing works. Price visualizes sexual instincts and intense vitality through abstracted images and their symbols. His metaphorical but sensuous eroticism is meaningful in exploration in that it evokes the diversity of erotic expressions in the modern society and contemporary art, where sexual discourse is actively taking place.
