공공미술의 관점에서 본 현대 섬유예술의 동향 분석

국문 초록

본 논문은 현대 섬유예술의 동향을 새로운 관점으로 살펴보기 위해 공공미술과 연계하여 분석한 것이다. 이 분석으로 섬유예술의 개념과 기능을 현대적 관점으로 살펴보는 것이 연구의 목적이다. 연구의 방법은 첫째, 공공미술과 섬유예술의 범주와 개념을 각각 논의한다. 특히, 1960년대 이후 포스트모더니즘의 영향 아래 전개된 미술 양식과 연관하여 두 예술체계의 상보적 관계를 분석해 본다. 둘째, 이론적 내용을 기반으로 2000년대 이후 설치된 공공 섬유 조형물을 현대 섬유예술의 동향 분석을 위한 사례로 제시하여 고찰한다. 사례 작품의 1차 선정 기준은 섬유를 표현 재료로 2000년도 이후에 제작되어 세계 명소에 설치된 현대미술품으로 한정한다. 수집한 1차 사례에서 세 가지 유형으로 공공 섬유 조형물을 분류할 수 있었고, 여기에서 다음과 같은 결과를 도출하였다. 먼저, 실내 공간에서 벗어나 도시 환경에 설치된 공공 조형물은 섬유의 유연하고 부드러운 물성에 기반하여 물리적으로 작품의 규모와 형태가 확장하고 있었다. 다음으로 온도와 습도, 눈과 비 등과 같은 환경적 요인에 취약해 내부에서만 감상할 수 있었던 섬유예술이 고도로 발전한 산업사회에서 생산된 섬유 매체의 사용으로 인해 외부 공간에까지 전시할 수 있게 되었다. 셋째, 섬유가 지닌 문화적·역사적 관점을 활용하여 예술가 개인의 의도와 목적이 아닌, 공공성을 최우선으로 구현하는 모습을 살펴볼 수 있었다. 이는 섬유예술의 의미와 상징의 규모가 예술가 개인에서 사회 전체를 위한 것으로 확장됨을 의미한다. 개별적으로 연구되던 두 예술체계를 꿸 수 있었던 것에 연구의 의의를 두며 이 논문을 기초로, 공공미술뿐만 아니라 다양한 관점으로 해석한 섬유예술을 통해 인류의 삶에 이바지하는 또 다른 확장적 가치가 발견되길 기대한다.

영문 초록

This study analyzes the status of contemporary fiber art in connection with public art in order to look at it from a new perspective. The purpose of this study is to examine the concept and function of fiber art from a modern point of view through this analysis. As for the research method, first, the categories and concepts of public art and fiber art are discussed respectively. In particular, it analyzes the complementary relationship between the two art systems in relation to the art styles developed under the influence of postmodernism after the 1960s. Second, based on the theoretical content, public fiber sculptures installed after the 2000s are presented and considered as examples for topographical analysis of modern fiber art. The primary selection criterion for works is limited to contemporary works of art produced after 2000 and installed in a familiar landmark around the world using fiber as an expression material. In the collected primary cases, public fiber sculptures could be classified into three types, and the following results were derived. First, public sculptures installed in urban environments, away from indoor spaces, can physically expand in size and shape freely based on the flexible and soft properties of fiber. Next, fiber art, which was vulnerable to environmental factors such as temperature and humidity, snow and rain, and could only be enjoyed inside, can now be exhibited outside due to the use of fiber media produced in a highly developed industrial society. Third, by utilizing the cultural and historical perspectives of fiber, it was possible to look at how the public was implemented as a top priority, not the individual intention and purpose of the artist. This means that the scale of meaning and symbolism of fiber art expands from an individual artist to that of society as a whole. Based on this study, it is hoped that not only public art but also fiber art interpreted from various perspectives will be found to contribute to human life.
