국문 초록

본고는 북학파 우정론의 심화된 이해를 위해 박지원과 박제가의 우정론을 비교한 연구이다. 같은 북학파로서 수평적 우정을 추구했다고 평가를 받는 두 사람의 우정론이 세부 논점에서 보인 차이를 밝혔다. 우선 제2장에서는 박지원의 ｢繪聲園集跋｣과 박제가의 ｢與郭澹園｣에 드러난 차이를 논했다. 이를 통해 박지원과 박제가가 尙友千古나 중국인과 교유하는 일에 대해 보인 태도의 차이에 화이론적 명분론에 대한 민감성의 차이와 교유에서 육체적 現前을 얼마만큼 중시하는가 하는 태도 차이가 작용했음을 밝혔다. 이어서 제3장에서는 李漢柱와의 死別에서 드러난 박지원·박제가의 우정론의 차이를 분석했다. 친구와 밀착적 동일시의 관계를 맺는 박지원은 친구의 죽음을 자아의 상실로 경험하며 절망감을 토로한 반면, 친구와 좀 더 유연한 거리를 확보한 박제가는 친구의 죽음을 완전한 소멸로 여기지 않으면서 친구의 정신이 글을 통해 남아 전해지도록 노력했음을 밝혔다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to further understand the friendship theory of Northern Learning School(Puk'akp'a) by comparing perspectives of Pak Chiwŏn and Pak Chega on friendship. This paper examined what differences these two figures had on friendship and their internal logic respectively. In Chapter 2, I compared Pak Chiwŏn's Hoesŏngwŏnjippal(Postface of Hoesŏngwŏnjip) and Pak Chega's Yŏgwaktamwŏn(Letter to Kwaktamwŏn), both texts written when trying to befriend Guo Zhihuan(Kwak Chiphwan in Sino-Korean), a Qing literati of Han Chinese origin, by exchanging letters, poems, and prose works. Two people differed in the sensitivity to Hua-Yi distinction and the emphasis of physical presence of a friend; and, accordingly, their attitude toward ideal 'spritual friendship with ancient figures' and friendship with a Chinese person turned out different: Pak Chiwŏn with a more conservative attitude while Pak Chega more forward-looking. In Chapter 3, I compared Pak Chiwŏn and Pak Chega's reaction on the untimely death of Yi Han-ju, their mutual friend. Pak Chiwŏn was emotionally very attached to his friend, therefore experienced the friend's death almost as his own, expressing personal frustration. Whereas Pak Chega maintained a more balanced distance in relationship, not seeing the death as the ultimate end and trying to immortalize his friend's spirit by writing a detailed eulogy.
