국문 초록

본 연구는 언론의 신뢰 하락과 정치적 편향성 논란 등으로 혼란스러운 언론 현실을 이해하고 개선하는 데 사회인식론적 접근이 도움이 될 수 있다는 판단 하에 저널리즘 연구에 사회인식론적 접근을 소개하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 지식의 개념과 종류, 인식 체계와 인식 규범, 그리고 인지적 분업을 중심으로 사회인식론을 간략히 소개한 후 사회인식론이 저널리즘 연구에 줄 수 있는 기여와 함의를 뉴스의 개념, 취재원과 출입처, 저널리즘의 하위 장르별 인식 규범에 맞춰 살펴 보았다. 저널리즘 연구를 사회인식론적으로 접근한다는 것은 무엇보다도 뉴스를 지식의 한 유형으로, 저널리즘을 인식 체계의 하나로 간주하는 것에서 출발한다. 저널리즘 행위의 본질은 공적 사안에 대한 정보 제공이기 때문에 언론 행위와 그 결과물인 뉴스를 내재적 기준에 따라 평가하기 위해서는 뉴스를 지식의 한 유형으로 정의하는 것이 많은 도움이 된다. 뉴스를 인식 규범에 맞춰 평가하는 것은 보도 내용에 대한 정당화 과정을 평가하는 것이다. 취재원의 진술을 중심으로 구성되는 뉴스에서 보도 내용에 대한 정당화는 취재원에 대한 취재 과정에서 이루어지기 때문에 뉴스를 지식으로 정의하는 것은 정당화 과정으로서 취재보도 관행의 적절성과 충실성에 대한 인식론적 평가로 이어진다. 언론의 취재보도 관행에서 가장 중요한 취재원은 출입처다. 출입처가 갖는 사회인식론적 특성은 출입처가 제공하는 정보의 진실성에 대한 정당화를 출입처에 맡긴 채 기자는 오직 그 내용을 정확하고 중립적으로 전달하는 것에 전념한다는 것이다. 인식 규범에 비춰 봤을 때 이런 취재보도 관행은 상당한 문제를 내포하고 있지만, 공적 사안에 관한 단순 정보를 신속하게 전달한다는 데일리 저널리즘의 인식 목적을 고려하면 어느 정도 용인될 수 있다. 그러나, 인식 목적이 서로 다른 인식 체계 간의 인지적 분업을 강조하는 사회인식론의 관점에서 보면, 권력이 감추려는 부정과 비리를 폭로하는 탐사 저널리즘, 중요한 이슈에 대해 전문가의 비평과 비판, 해설과 견해를 듣는 시사 토크 프로그램을 평가하는 기준으로 형식적 공정성을 적용하는 것은 재고될 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

This study attempted to introduce a social epistemological approach to journalism studies, judging that a social epistemological approach can help understand and improve the chaotic media reality due to lower reliability and controversy over political bias. To this end, I briefly introduced social epistemology, focusing on the concept and type of knowledge, epistemic system and epistemic norms, and cognitive division of labor, and examined the contributions and implications of social epistemology to journalism studies according to the concept of news, news source, and epistemic norms for journalism sub-genre. The social epistemological approach to journalism studies starts with considering news as a type of knowledge and the journalism as one of the epistemic systems. Since the essence of journalism is to provide information on public issues, it is very helpful to define news as a type of knowledge in order to evaluate journalism and the news according to intrinsic standards. Evaluating news according to the epistemic norms is evaluating the justification process for the content of the report. Since the justification of the report content in news composed of the reporter's statement is done in the process of reporting the news sources, defining the news as knowledge leads to an epistemological evaluation of the appropriateness and fidelity of the reporting practice as a justification process. The most important source of information in the journalism's practice is a beat. The social epistemological characteristic of a beat is that reporters are only committed to accurately and neutrally delivering the content, leaving the justification for the authenticity of the information provided. In light of the epistemic norms, this practice of reporting has considerable problems, but it is somewhat acceptable considering the perceived purpose of Daily Journalism, which is to quickly convey simple information on public issues. However, from the perspective of social epistemology, which emphasizes cognitive division of labor among different epistemic systems, it is necessary to reconsider applying formal fairness as a criterion for evaluating investigative journalism and radio current affairs programs.
