18세기 호남과 근기 실학자의 ‘사이’와 ‘거리’

국문 초록

전라도 흥덕 출신의 노론 황윤석과 광주군 출신의 근기 남인 안정복은 博學多識한 학자로 영조가 추진한 탕평정책으로 관직에 나갈 기회를 얻었다. 그들은 일생 동안 만난 적은 없었지만 출사한 이후 官路에서 몇 차례 교차하였다. 특히 황윤석은 장릉 참봉에 임명되어 영월 부사 정술조를 만나 안정복에 대해 ‘구체적으로’ 들을 수 있었다. 정술조는 자신과 안정복이 竹馬交友였다고 하면서 ‘安書’- 『東史綱目』을 소개하였던 것이다. 황윤석은 장릉 참봉을 거쳐 중앙 관서에서 근무하면서 안정복 등 남인의 학문을 접하였다. 황윤석은 종부시 직장으로 근무하면서 『文獻備考』 편찬에 참여하였는데, 남인 신경준이 맡고 있는 ｢輿地考｣에 관심이 많았다. 신경준은 안정복 등 남인의 견해를 수용하여 ｢여지고｣를 편찬하였고, 황윤석은 『문헌비고』를 편찬하는 과정에 남인의 학문을 직,간접적으로 접하였다. 이후 황윤석과 안정복은 비슷한 관로를 거쳤는데, 황윤석은 정조 3년(1779)에 안정복의 후임으로 목천 현감에 임명되었다. 목천현에 임명되었다는 소식을 들은 황윤석은 목천현에 대한 정보와 자료를 모았고, 안정복이 편찬한 『大麓誌』를 열람하였다. 『대록지』를 검토한 황윤석은 발문을 짓는 등 그 내용에 대한 자신의 생각을 정리해 두었다. 목천현감으로 부임한 안정복은 평소 ‘下學’의 학문을 실천할 기회로 생각하고 향촌의 질서를 확립하기 위해 洞契를 회복하는 등 노력을 기울였다. 읍지의 편찬도 이러한 노력의 일환이라고 할 수 있다. 그러나 이러한 안정복의 노력에 비해 ‘악습’은 쉽게 해결되지 않았다. 안정복의 후임으로 부임한 황윤석은 ‘백성을 지나치게 사랑한’ 안정복의 행정에 대해서는 긍정적으로 평가하지 않았다. 그는 전임 현감 안정복의 ‘흔적’과 경쟁하며 지방관으로 치적을 남기려다가 오히려 파직되는 불운을 겪게 되었다. 안정복과 황윤석은 근기 남인과 호남 노론이라는 지역과 당색으로 인한 거리에도 불구하고 그 경계에 갇히지 않고 박학과 전문을 추구하며 새로운 시대를 예고하는 삶을 살았다. 특히 황윤석은 호남 노론이라는 정체성에 매몰되지 않고 안정복 등 남인의 학문을 수용하며 자신의 시대를 인내하였다.

영문 초록

Hwang Yoon-seok, a Noron scholar from Jeolla-do, and Ahn Jung-bok, a Namin scholar from Gyeonggi-do, were recognized as a well-informed and professional scholar, and were given a chance to get into office through the Tangpyeong policy promoted by King Yeongjo. Though Hwang Yun-seok and Ahn Jung-bok had never met each other in their lives, they were similar in office after becoming bureaucrats. However, Hwang Yun-seok was appointed to the Jangneung Chambong, and he met Jeong Sul-jo, the vice governor of Yeongwol, and listened to Ahn Jung-bok's story in detail. Jeong Sul-jo introduced 『Dongsagangmok』written by Ahn Jung-bok, saying he was close to Ahn Jung-bok. After that, Hwang Yoon-seok worked as the head of the central department and participated in the compilation project of 『Moonheonbigo』. At that time, a Namin scholar, Shin Kyung-joon took charge of the historical geography of 『Moonheonbigo』, summarizing the views of Namin, including Ahn Jung-bok. Hwang Yun-seok and Ahn Jung-bok went through a similar route in the government office, and in 1779, Hwang Yun-seok was promoted to the rank of Mokcheon governor after Ahn Jung-bok. Hwang Yoon-seok, who was appointed as the head of Mokcheon, obtained and read 『Daerokji』 compiled by Ahn Jung-bok. Daerok was the old name of Mokcheon. Hwang Yoon-seok, who had looked through 『Daerokji』, said Ahn Jung-bok described it in great detail. Ahn Jung-bok, as the magistrate of Mokcheon, thought of it as an opportunity to research the practical knowledge and tried to establish the ethics of the village. The compilation of 『Daerokji』 was part of such efforts. Hwang Yoon-seok praised Ahn Jung-bok's efforts, but pointed out the limitations, saying that he ruled too loosely.However, Hwang Yoon-seok also failed to overcome the limitations of Ahn Jung-bok and was pushed him out of office by the lower management of Mokcheon. In short, This situation was not their limitations at that time, but a social evil of local administration.
