시각적 사고 전략(VTS)의 효과와 교육적 활용방안 연구

국문 초록

현대 사회는 시각 이미지로 소통됨으로써, 시각적 사고력이 중요한 시대이다. 미술작품 감상을 통해 시각적 사고력을 기르고자 하는 VTS(Visual thinking strategies)는 1990년대 Philip Yenawine과 Abigail Housen이 개발한 미술감상교육 프로그램으로, 미국을 비롯한 많은 나라에서 활용되고 있는 교육 방법이다. 본고는 VTS의 개발 배경과 교육 방법을 고찰하고, 이론적 기반으로 Vygotsky의 사회적 구성주의를 검토하였다. VTS의 교육적 효과를 감상 교육의 측면, 비판적 사고와 전이의 측면과 의사소통의 측면에서 선행연구들을 분석하였다. 기존의 미술 감상 교육이 정보 전달과 작품 해석에 초점을 맞추었다면, VTS는 감상자가 가지고 있는 지식과 경험을 토대로 작품을 충분한 시간 동안 관찰하고 발견한 것을 토대로 자유롭고 개방적인 대화를 통해 작품의 의미를 공동으로 탐구 한다. 이러한 사회적 구성주의적 토의를 통해 VTS의 교육적 활용방안으로 세 가지를 제시해 보았 다. 첫째, 미술작품에서 다양한 주제의 이미지로 확장되는 VTS 토의를 통한 예술적 성장이 가능하 다. 둘째, VTS를 결합하여 다양한 교과에 적용함으로써 융합교육이 가능하다. 다양한 이미지와 언어적 텍스트를 주제로 다룸으로써 감상을 중심으로 한 창의적 탐구가 가능해진다. 셋째, 교사교육을 통한 전문성 실천 방안이다. VTS에서 교사는 토의에 참여하고 실행을 숙고하며 배운다. 교사는 토의 진행기술을 발전시키고, 토의를 수업과 통합하고 워크숍에 참석하면서 다른 교사들과 함께 전문성을 개발하여 실천공동체로 성장할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Visual thinking strategies(VTS), which develops visual thinking skills through observing and discussing art, is an art appreciation education program created by Philip Yenawine and Abigail Housen in the 1990s. This study examines Vygotsky's social constructivism as a theoretical basis and educational method of VTS. The effects of VTS; were reviewed through appreciation education, critical thinking and transfer, and communication. Whereas the existing art appreciation education focused on information delivery and interpretation of works, VTS shared the meaning of works through constructive dialogue based on observations and the knowledge and experience of the viewers. There are three suggested ways to use VTS in education. First, through the discussion of VTS, artistic growth is possible that expands from artworks to images of various themes. Second, combining VTS and applying it to various subjects makes convergence education possible. By dealing with various images and linguistic texts as themes, creative inquiry centering on appreciation becomes possible. Third, educators can learn by participating in discussions and reflecting on their practice. Therefore, it becomes possible through the growth of a community of practice by developing professionalism together with teachers through discussion and reflecting on their implementation for schools and by participating in workshops.
