국문 초록

이 글은 1959년 한국 장로교 분열에 대한 미국 선교사와 미국 복음주의권의 반응을 연구하였다. 반-에큐메니칼 노선의 연구자들은 한국교회 분열의 원인을 에큐메니칼 운동에 대한 찬반 갈등으로 주장한다. 그리고 미국 선교사들이 본국 교회의 에큐메니칼 노선에 따라 한국장로교회의 에큐메니칼 편을 지원했다고 주장한다. 1957-1960년 한국 선교에 관련된 미국 장로교회의 문서를 분석한 결과 위의 주장은 사실이 아님이 밝혀졌다. 미연합장로회 선교사들이 한국 NAE 그룹을 반대한 이유는 첫째로 그들의 재정 스캔들 때문이었고, 둘째는 반-WCC 운동을 교권 투쟁에 이용한 것 때문이었다. 또한 그들이 미국교회의 에큐메니칼 노선을 정통 신앙에서 이탈하는 것으로 공격했기 때문이다. 남장로회 선교사들은 신학적으로 한국 NAE와 가까웠다. 연합장로회 선교회는 한국 NAE의 성장을 돕는 남장로회에 비판적 태도를 가졌다. 그러나 남장로회가 한국 NAE를 변호할 수 없었던 이유는 그들의 재정 스캔들 때문이었다. 남장로회는 갈라진 한국장로교회를 화해시키고 재연합하는 운동을 전개했으나 성공하지 못했다. 미국 NAE는 연합장로회의 조언을 받아들여 한국 NAE와의 관계를 단절했다. 결국 미연합장로회와 남장로회는 갈라진 한국장로교회의 에큐메니칼 측과 선교 협력 관계를 지속하게 된다.

영문 초록

This article studies the reaction of American missionaries and Evangelicals to the division of the Presbyterian Church of Korea (PCK) in 1959. Researchers on the anti-ecumenical side of the debate argue that the main cause of the schism was the pros and cons of the ecumenical movement. They also claim that the American missionaries supported the ecumenical side of the PCK according to the ecumenical position of their home church. As a result of analyzing the documents of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A. and U.S.) related to the Korean missions circa 1957-1960, evidence was found that contradicts the above claims. The United Presbyterian Mission (UPM) opposed the Korean National Association of Evangelicals (NAE) in the first place because of their financial scandals. Secondly it was because they used the anti-WCC campagin along McIntire line in their struggle for power . They also attacked the ecumenical position of the American church as a deviation from the orthodox faith. The Southern Presbyterian Mission (SPM) was theologically close to the Korean NAE. The UPM had a critical attitude toward the SPM (which supported the Korean NAE). However, the reason why the SPM was unable to defend the Korean NAE was because of their unethical conduct. Instead, the SPM launched a campaign to reconcile and reunite the divided PCK, but without success. The American NAE took the advice of the UPM and cut ties with the Korean NAE. In the end, the UPM and SPM continued their cooperative relationship with the ecumenical line of the divided PCK.
