국문 초록

이 글은 현대 그리스도교 신학사에서 자본주의와 가장 치열하게 대결하는 신학적 비판이론을 생산했던 라틴아메리카 해방신학의 한 흐름인 경제신학을 재검토하고, 오늘날의 금융화된 자본주의의 맥락에서 그 기획을 재활성화하는 과제를 수행하고자 한다. 이를 위해 우선 경제신학의 주요 연구 대상과 방법을 검토하고, 그 의의와 한계를 지적한다. 경제신학은 경제학과 신학의 학제적 대화를 통해 물신숭배적 경제체제의 이론과 실천을 비판적으로 분석해 왔는데, 특히 경제문제를 신학 내적인 주제로 수용한다는 점을 고유한 성격으로 지닌다. 따라서 마르크스의 물신숭배 비판을 신학적 관점에서 자본이라 불리는 거짓 신에 대한 우상숭배 비판으로 전유하고 발전시킴으로써, 신학적 연구 대상의 차원에서나 신학하기의 방법론적 차원에서 신학의 새로운 지평을 열었다는 점이 경제신학의 의의라 할 수 있다. 그러나 경제신학의 물신숭배 비판은 이자 낳는 자본에 관한 분석에 머물러 있다는 점에서 명백한 이론적 한계를 드러낸다. 그러므로 경제신학이 금융화된 자본주의 시대의 맥락에서 재구성될 필요성이 제기된다. 이어서 가치의 자립화 운동이라는 틀에서 자본의 물신화 이론을 재검토하고, 이를 바탕으로 자본주의의 금융화를 가공자본의 발전으로 규정한다. 그리고 이자 낳는 자본을 넘어선 가공자본의 물신성의 요체를 규명한다. 가치의 자립화는 가치형태들과 노동착취 사이에 새로운 층위의 매개를 점진적으로 도입함으로써 그 원천으로부터 가치형태들이 분리를 진행해나가는 것을 가리킨다는 점에서 자본의 점진적 물신화의 다른 표현이다. 이러한 가치의 자립화라는 측면에서 금융화는 생산적인 노동으로부터 가치형태가 거의 완벽하게 자립화된 가공자본의 발전으로 재규정될 수 있다. 따라서 자본주의적 생산관계를 가장 높은 수준으로 물상화한다는 사실에서 가공자본의 물신성이 드러난다. 결론적으로, 경제신학의 논리를 적용하여 금융화 현상을 설명한다면, 그것은 자본주의적 생산관계의 물상화가 가장 폭력적으로 실현된 형태, 즉 가장 추상적이고 유령적인 형태의 물신숭배를 작동시키는 억압적이고 불의한 우상숭배의 출현이라 요약할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper reviews economic theology, a flow of Latin American liberation theology that produced the most intense theological critique of capitalism in the history of modern Christian theology. The paper seeks to revitalize this project in the context of today’s financialized capitalism. To this end, this paper first reviews the main research subjects and methods of economic theology, and points out its significance and limitations. Economic theology has critically analyzed the theory and practice of a fetishistic economic system through interdisciplinary dialogue between economics and theology, especially with its unique characteristic that it accepts economic problems as a theology’s inner subject. Therefore, Marx’s critique of the fetishism was appropriated and developed from the theological point of view to the critique of the idolatry of the false god called capital, and opened a new horizon of theology at the level of theological research and with regard to the methodology of doing-theology. However, the critique of the fetishism in economic theology reveals clear theoretical limitations in that it remains in the realm of analysis of interest-bearing capital. Accordingly, the need for economic theology to be reconstructed in the context of the era of financialized capitalism is raised. Subsequently, the theory of fetishization of capital is reviewed in the framework of the movement towards autonomization of value. Based on this, the financialization of capitalism is defined as the development of fictitious capital. In addition, it identifies the core of the fetishistic character of fictitious capital beyond interest-bearing capital. The autonomization of value is another expression of the progressive fetishization of capital in that it refers to the progressive separation of the forms of value from its source through the gradual introduction of new layers of mediation between value forms and labor exploitation. In terms of such autonomization of value, financialization can be redefined as the development of fictitious capital in which value form becomes independent from productive labor almost completely. Therefore, the fact that capitalist production relations are reified to the highest level reveals the fetishistic character of fictitious capital. In conclusion, if the logic of economic theology is applied to explain the phenomenon of financialization, it can be summarized as the most violent form of reification of capitalist production relations, that is, the repressive and unjust idolatry that operates the most abstract and spectral form of fetishism.
