국문 초록

이 논문의 목적은 독도의용수비대 활동을 제주해녀와 협력관계를 중심으로 주민생활사적 측면에서 재조명해보는 것이다. 주민생활사적 측면에서 독도의용수비대의 독도수호활동을 재조명하는 것은 독도의용수비대의 존재가치에 대해 새로운 의미를 부여할 수 있기 때문이다. 지금까지는 일본의 독도침입에 맞서 민간인으로서 독도를 경비하고 수호했다는 독도경비사적 범주에서만 독도의용수비대의 존재가 평가받아왔지만, 수년간 독도를 삶의 터전으로 일구고 그 터전 위에서 제주해녀들과 함께 생활해오면서 독도를 지키고 관리해온 점도 새롭게 평가받아야 할 부분이다. 즉 독도의용수비대는 전쟁으로 인해 국가의 공권력이 미치지 못하는 시기에 독도를 실질적으로 지배할 수 있도록 독도를 지켰을 뿐만 아니라, 그곳에서 생활하며 울릉도 어민들과 제주해녀들이 함께 어로활동을 할 수 있는 생활공간으로 독도를 가꾸고 관리하는 데에도 큰 기여를 했다고 평가할 수 있다. 다시 말하면 독도의 실질적 지배·괸리가 독도주민생활을 통해 뿌리내릴 수 있도록 한 역할도 동시에 인정받아야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to re-examine Dokdo's volunteer activities in terms of residents' life history, focusing on oral testimony of the Jeju Haenyeo. In terms of residents' life history, the reason why Dokdo Voluntary Guards re-examined Dokdo protection activities can give a new meaning to the existence value of Dokdo Voluntary Guards. Until now, Dokdo Voluntary Guards have been evaluated for their existence only in the category of Dokdo guard history, which guarded and protected Dokdo as civilians against Japanese invasion of Dokdo. However, the fact that Dokdo has been cultivated as a base of life for many years and has lived with Jeju haenyeo on that place to protect and manage Dokdo is another part to be evaluated. In other words, the Dokdo Voluntary Guards not only protected Dokdo so that it could actually dominate Dokdo at a time when the state's public power was not reached due to the war, but also contributed greatly to cultivating and managing Dokdo as a living space where Ulleungdo fishermen and Jeju Haenyeo could fish together. In other words, Dokdo Voluntary Guards should also be recognized for their role in allowing Dokdo's actual control and manage to take root through the lives of Dokdo residents.
