李建昌의 작품에 대한 呂圭亨의 書後 고찰

국문 초록

19세기 중반에 태어나 일제강점기까지 살았던 문인 呂圭亨(1848~1921)은 친일 행적으로 인해 그의 文翰과 당대적 위상에 비해 현대의 한문학연구에서 주목 받지 못하였다. 그러나 그는 당대에 이미 李建昌과 함께 운위될 정도의 문필을 인정받았고, 그 자신보다 연하의 이건창에게 작문의 비결을 구하기도 하였던 문장가였다. 여규형의 『荷亭集』에는 이건창의 작품에 대한 書後가 세 편 저록되어 있다. 본고를 통해 새롭게 밝혀낸 사실을 간략히 제시하면 다음과 같다. 여규형은 ｢書甯齋姜古懽批評孫武子跋後｣의 서두에서 『批評孫武子』는 姜瑋가 가장 마음에 들게 지었다고 여기는 문장이고 ｢姜古歡批評孫武子跋｣은 이건창이 가장 마음을 쏟아 지은 글이라고 단언하였다. 이는 그가 강위와 이건창의 대화를 목격한 사람이었고 이건창의 글을 典範으로 삼아 숙독한 작가였기에 가능한 것이었다. 李根洙를 입전한 작품인 이건창의 ｢秋水子傳｣을 여규형은 ‘義川子傳’이라고 지칭하였다. 이것은 여규형의 서후에서만 발견되는 정보이다. 이근수의 죽음에 대해 그가 강직하고 꼿꼿하며 악을 미워하는 성격의 소유자였던 탓에 정치적인 희생물이 되었던 것이지 조정에서 그를 제거하려 한 것은 아니었다는 시각을 내비췄다. 『東文集成』의 편자 宋伯玉에 대해서는 그의 협소한 도량과 완고한 식견 때문에 죽음에 이르게 되었다고 판단하면서도 안타까워하는 심정을 드러내었다. 여규형의 서후를 통해 새롭게 파악된 사실들은 이건창의 작품에 대한 심층적인 이해를 돕는 것은 물론, 19세기 문학사의 주요한 세 문인 姜瑋·李根洙·宋伯玉에 대한 연구를 심화하는 데에도 큰 자료적 가치가 있다. 본고에서는 이 같은 점에 주목하여 여규형의 작품이 지닌 의미를 고찰해 보았다.

영문 초록

Born in the mid-19th century and lived until Japanese colonial era, a writer named Yeo Kyu-hyung(1848〜1921) was not noticed in modern Chinese literature research compared to his writing and contemporary status due to his pro-Japanese activities. However, he was a writer who had already been recognized for his writing to the extent that he was mentioned with Lee Kun-chang at that time, and also sought the secret of his composition from Lee Kun-chang, who was younger than him. Yeo Gyu-hyung's Hajeongjip contains three books on Lee Kun-chang's work. In this paper, paying attention to this point, we considered the meaning of Yeo Kyu-hyung's work. The facts newly revealed through this paper are briefly presented as follows. In the beginning of An Appreciation Record for a critique of Sonmuja Epilogue by Yeo Kyu-hyung, he affirmed, “a critique of Sonmuja is the sentence that Kang Wi thinks is the most liked masterpiece, and a critique of Sonmuja Epilogue is the sentence that Lee Kun-chang put most elaborate effort.” This was possible because he was a person who could witness the conversation between Kang Wi and Lee Kun-chang and a writer who read Lee Kun-chang's writings as an ideal sentence. Yeo Gyu-hyung referred to Lee Kun-chang's ｢Chusujajeon｣ as ｢Uichunjajeon｣. This information is found only in Yeo Kyu-hyung's comments. Regarding Lee Keun-soo's death, he expressed the view that he was a political victim because he was a strong, upright, and hated evil, but that the court did not try to remove him. As for Song Baek-ok, who compiled the Dongmunjipsung, Yeo Kyu-hyung judged that he had died because of his narrow mind and stubborn knowledge, and expressed regret for him. The newly identified facts through Yeo Kyu-hyung's comments are of great material value not only to help Lee Kun-chang's in-depth understanding of his works, but also to deepen the study of the major three texts in 19th century literary history. In this paper, I focused on this point and examined the meaning of Yeo Kyu-hyung's work.
