십이지 문양을 응용한 현대 도자 작품 연구

국문 초록

십이지 설화는 우리 민족의 근본사상과 문화적 정서가 담긴 유산으로 우리 생활 속에 상징적인 이미지로 존재하고 있다. 현대는 디자인상품의 고부가가치 제고 수단으로 국가의 고유문화를 나타낼 수 있는 디자인의 중요성이 부각되고 있다. 도자디자인 분야에서도 전통 문화의 디자인 적용에 대한 관심이 높은데 비해서 현대적, 세계적인 감각으로 발전해 나가는데 어려움을 겪고 있는 실정이다. 전통에서 가져온 소재를 단순히 모방하는 것이 아닌 십이지의 특징을 현대적이고 세계적인 감각으로 발전시켜 개발, 연구하는 것은 디자인 소재의 확대와 더불어 소비자의 관심을 모을 수 있을 것으로 기대한다. 이는 우리 민족의 정서와 감성을 현대적인 감각의 도자디자인에 적용하는데 있어서도 훌륭한 매개체로 작용이 가능하다. 따라서 본 연구는 한국의 전통 설화 속에 등장하는 십이지 동물을 도자디자인의 문양으로 활용하기 위한 방법적 모색을 진행하였다. 이를 위해 십이지의 기원 및 의미를 알아보고, 그 종류와 상징성을 분석하였다. 십이지의 형태를 변형, 강조하고 현대적으로 재구성하여 이미지를 정립, 도자디자인에 접목시켜 십이지의 다양한 표현 가능성을 모색하는 데 목적을 두고자 한다. 본 연구에서는 경쟁이 치열한 세계시장에서 차별화 요소로 우리민족의 고유한 정서와 사상이 담긴 십이지 문양의 역사적 배경과 그 의미에 대한 이론적 고찰을 바탕으로 도자디자인을 개발하고 시제품으로 제작해 봄으로써 전통문양의 현대적 디자인 활용 가능성을 모색해보았다. 십이지에 속하는 동물들이 갖고 있는 상징성과 조형미, 그에 따른 사상적 원리를 현대적인 디자인 트렌드로 응용하려는 시도이다. 연구방법은 십이지 관련 선행 논문과 문헌 고찰을 토대로 이론적 배경을 구성하였고, 십이지 중 양, 돼지, 호랑이, 용을 선별하여 문양의 이미지를 형상화하여 도자디자인에 접목시켜 작품으로 제작하였다. 십이지의 독특한 매력을 느낄 수 있는, 조형감각을 현대적 감성에 어울리도록 문양을 변형하고 재배치 시켜 소재와 어울리는 이미지를 표현하여 도자디자인의 표현영역을 확대하고자 하였다. 본 연구를 통해 향후 다변화되는 국제 경쟁력 속에서 더욱 다양한 전통 문양의 발굴과 응용을 통한 창의적인 디자인 개발이 이루어지길 기대한다. 또한 이를 일상생활 속에서 다양한 활용을 통해 국민들에게 친숙한 이미지를 구축하고 한국의 브랜드 가치를 높인 디자인 상품 개발이 지속적으로 발전되기를 바란다.

영문 초록

Twelve Animal Zodiac tale is our heritage containing the fundamental thoughts and cultural emotion of our people, which is a symbolic image residing in our lives. Modern society emphasizes the importance of design which shows the original culture of a country as a means of enhancing high value design products. In the field of ceramic design, the interest toward applying traditional culture design ins quiet high, but there is difficulty developing it into modern and global senses. It is considered that not just simply copying the traditional material, but to develop and study the twelve animal zodiac tale into modern and global sense will concentrate the interest of consumers along with expanding the design material at the same time. This will play an important role in applying the emotion and sensitivity of our people to ceramic design with modern touch. Therefore, this study aimed to seek utilization method of applying twelve animal zodiac appearing in Korean traditional tales to ceramic design. To achieve this, the study looked into the origin and menacing of twelve animal zodiac, and analyzed the variety and symbolization. The purpose of this study is to change the form of twelve animal zodiac, omit and modernistically reconstruct to establish image and seek the various expression possibility of twelve animal zodiac to ceramic design. This study seeks the utilization potential of traditional pattern to modern design based on theoretical consideration on the historical background and meaning of twelve animal zodiac containing our original emotion as one of the differentiation element in global market filled with competition, develop the ceramic design and produce trial products. The symbolism, aesthetic value of sculpture, principles of ideas of animals in twelve zodiac were attempted to be applied to modern design trend. As for the research method, the theoretical background is set based on the previous thesis and literature review, and selected sheep, pig, tiger and dragon among the twelve animals with special attract to apply to ceramic design and produced work pieces. By changing the pattern appropriate to modern emotion, rearranged to express trendy appeal, we attempted to expand the expression range of ceramic design. This study expects continuos creative design development based on studying and application of various traditional pattern within the diversified international competitiveness. Also, based on various utilization in our daily lives, we expect continuous development of design production with improved Korean brand value by building familiar image to the people.
