윌리엄 데일리(William Daley)의 건축도자 특징과 전개과정 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 미국의 건축도예가 윌리엄 데일리가 현재와 같이 다층 구조 방식으로 건축적 이미지를 독창적인 방식으로 표현하기까지의 과정과 특징을 시기별로 구분하여 각 과정에 영향을 미쳤던 요인과 그 과정에서 보여 지는 새로운 시도에 주목하고 있다. 1950년대 경제적 호황기 동부지역의 회화에서부터 발현하였던 추상표현주의 사조의 영향을 받아 새로운 시도를 했던 도예가들이 있었다. 이들과는 달리 데일리는 기능의 가치를 인정함과 동시에 작업 과정의 결과로 얻게 되는 기물 내·외부와 그 경계를 나누는 얇은 벽을 새로운 표현의 요소로 끌어들이며 자신만의 표현요소를 통해 건축적 공간을 구조적으로 해석하여 도자예술의 표현 영역을 확장하였다. 다층구조 방식의 성형법 사용, 모듈화된 작업과정, 건축적 요소의 도입, 수평방향의 표현 확장을 위한 X,Y,Z 축개념의 적용 등으로 대표되는 그의 작업과정과 작품의 특징적 변화를 시기별로 살펴보고자 한다. 도자예술가들은 2차 세계대전 이후 현대미술의 빠른 변화과정에 적응하거나 독자적인 개별성을 유지하기 위한 다양한 시도를 하였는데 윌리엄 데일리는 표현의 대상으로서의 점토의 물성과 태생적 가치인 기능을 지속적으로 작업과정에 포함시키고 있다. 자신의 장점인 세심한 드로잉 능력을 입체화 과정에 활용하거나 효율을 우선시하는 산업에서 사용하던 결합 방식을 성형 과정에 적극적으로 활용하면서 부터 작업 과정의 속도감이 높아졌고 최종 결과물이 구조적인 동시에 역동적이게 보이는 효과까지 얻을 수 있었다. 다양한 문화권의 종교와 기물형태의 이해를 바탕으로 확장된 공간을 지속적으로 표현하고 있는데 이 과정에서 그의 개인적 경험과 작업의 배경을 이해 할 수 있는 여러 자료들을 동시에 참고하여 현재와 같이 그의 작업이 정립되기까지의 이면의 원인도 확인하고자 하였다.

영문 초록

This study has its purpose to analyze factors influenced at each stages and new attempts appeared in the process by dividing time periodic stages and characteristics of American architectural ceramic artist, William Daley who has expressed with a form of multitier architecture. Without revealing wall while inner and outer form can influence on each others to establish boundary naturally and in order for interior and exterior to be grasped three-dimensionally at first sight, planned work processes have established based on drawings. Through this process, effects to expand spatial expression region can be expanded by developing a vessel which is critical to put random objects on. While separated into expression method of other region, methods to utilize inner and outer space as an advantage of clay have caused by material restriction that only form molded with thin surface of wall can stand against high temperature during plastic process. However, trial utilizing structure of such wall surface which is a restriction of clay molding for plasticity allows potters to express inescapable structure that inner and outer space exchange mutual influence no matter what potter has intended, and it also allows molding of dual structure of wall surface. William Daley, furthermore, works on his own style molding works by designing vertical direction multi-level molding method and concept of X,Y,Z axis for expression expansion toward horizontal direction. He has introduced arrangement considering both opened inner and outer space at a same time, combination of multi-level structure, and cruciform inner structure. He has utilized architectural image at molding process by using detail drawing drawn before a process of molding and using step-up structure, arch, pipe, and pillar structure at various locations. Latterly, he has expressed expanded space based on an understanding of religions of various cultures, and form of vessels.
