국문 초록

본 연구는 이탈리아의 건축도예가 니노 카루소(Nino Caruso, 1928- )의 작품 전개 과정과 그 과정에 영향을 미친 전후(戰後)의 급변하던 시대적 상황, 지중해 연안의 특이한 지역적 특성, 동시대의 여러 예술운동과 같은 주변 환경요인들에 의한 작품의 변화 과정에 주목하고 있다. 세계 2차 대전 당시 이탈리아는 무솔리니의 파시즘 독재 정권 아래에 있었으며, 자신의 정권이 고대 로마제국의 연장선에 있음을 알리려는 무솔리니의 통치 아래 예술가들은 권력에 이용당하고 통제되는 상황이었다. 패전 후 이탈리아는 오랜 기간 독재정권의 잔재를 지우고 로마올림픽 개최준비와 전후 재건 사업을 활발히 진행하였으며, 사회적으로는 다양한 표현욕구가 분출되던 시기였다. 미국의 전후 경제적 호황기에 맞물려 유행하였던 추상표현주의(Abstract Expressionism)와 상응하여 유럽에서는 비정형의 주관적 표현을 중요하게 여기는 앵포르멜(Art Informel) 계열의 작가들이 왕성하게 활동하기 시작하였다. 로마에서 자신의 스튜디오를 열면서 카루소는 그들과 활발한 교류를 하면서 오히려 재료와 물성(material)의 중요함을 인지하게 되었고, 그가 태어나고 자란 지중해 연안 지역의 다양한 문화적 유산과 개인적 체험들을 적극적으로 작업 과정에 끌어 들이려 노력하게 된다. 다양한 재료의 물성과 이를 활용한 예술적 가능성의 실현에 창조적인 아이디어를 쏟아 붓기 시작하면서 당시에는 도자(陶磁)분야에서 낯설었던 새로운 재료를 적극적으로 제작과정에 수용하여 활용함으로서 그의 작품에 획기적인 변화를 맞이하게 된다. 그의 유연한 실험적 태도는 당시의 전후 재건사업에 적극적으로 적용되면서 건축에서 장식의 한 부분에만 한정되었던 기존의 도자재료에서 확장된 공간으로의 영역까지 표현이 가능하게 되었다. 카루소는 재료와 물성(material)을 대하는 그의 유연한 자세와 새로움에 대한 지적호기심으로 도자가 진부한 재료로 취급되기 쉬웠던 당시의 시대 상황에서 독자적인 영역을 개척하였으며, 공공시설과 건축에 실재 적용될 수 있는 장식적 소재로서의 도자뿐만 아니라 예술적 가치를 높여줄 수 있는 동등한 협업으로서의 가능성을 개척한 좋은 사례라 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This study pays attentions to the development process of works by Nino Caruso (1928- ), a architecture ceramist in Italia and historical situation dramatically changed after war, which had an effect on the process, specific logical characteristics of Mediterranean coast, and modifications of works due to their environmental factors such as many kinds of contemporaneous art movements. During the Second World War, Italia was dominated by the fascism dictatorship of Mussolini who wanted to demonstrate that his regime is in line with the old Roman Empire, under which artists were exploited and controlled by his power. After Italia lost the war, it eliminated remnants of dictatorship for a long time and actively conducted preparation for the Roma Olympic and reconstruction project after the war, and various expression desires were socially erupted. In Europe, the writers belonging to the Art Informel line which emphasized atypical subjective expressions, and which was in line with the Abstract Expressionism prevailed in economic booming after the war in America, began to actively be involved in art activities. Opening his studio in Rome, Caruso recognized the importance of material and physical property through active exchanges with them, and strived to introduce individual experiences and various cultural heritages in the Mediterranean coast into work process. As he devoted creative ideas into realization of artistic potential using diverse physical properties of materials, a new material which was unfamiliar in the ceramic filed was actively accommodated into and used in the process of creating, and therefore, innovative change appears in his works. As his flexible experimental attitude was positively applied to the reconstruction project after the war, the previous ceramic materials which had been limited to a part of ornament can be expressed even in an expanded space. Caruso reclaimed his independent sector in the historical situation where the ceramic was likely to be regarded as an old-fashioned material, with his flexible attitude for material and physical property and intellectual curiosity regarding a new one, which may be a good case of finding a potential as not only the ceramic as an ornamental material practically applied to public facilities and architectures but also the equal cooperation through which artistic value may be enhanced.
