국문 초록

나치에 대한 저항은 제3제국과는 ‘다른 독일’을 추구하는 운동으로 전개 되었다. 그것은 다를 뿐 아니라 더 나은 독일이어야 했다. 1944년 7월 20일 의 사건은 성공 여부와 무관하게 기존 체제를 전복하고 그에 대한 대안을 제시하려는 가장 큰 규모의 저항 시도였다. 군 수뇌부가 주도하고 여러 계 층의 민간인이 참여한 이 거사는 히틀러의 암살과 더불어 내각의 구성까지 기획하고 있었다. 그러나 저항의 상징으로서 ‘7월 20일’이 나치 체제가 붕 괴되자 즉각적으로 ‘다른 독일’의 출발에 토대로 작용했던 것은 아니었다. 저항투쟁가들은 체제의 극단적인 억압 아래 그 시대를 살아 넘기지 못했 고, 후대에 의해 재건의 정신적 기초로서 불러내져야만 그 역할의 기능이 가능했다. 그것은 정부와 학계와 대중에게서 전개된 제3제국에 대한 평가의 시대적인 변화에 의존적으로 될 수밖에 없었다. 즉 저항과 재건의 연결은 기억문화의 형태로 전개되었다고 할 수 있다. 저항에 대한 이해와 평가는 결국 제3제국에 대한 전후 독일의 과거청산 작업과 직접 맞물리는 것이었다. 반역과 배신의 누명에서 벗어나고 ‘다른 독일’의 본보기와 기반으로서 부각되는 과정이 서서히 전개되어 자리를 잡을 즈음 이 저항운동이 구상했던 대안의 문제점을 비판하는 ‘7월 20일’의 ‘탈신화화’ 작업이 대두되었고, 이 저항의 상대화는 다른 저항들의 의미가 부상되는 것으로 연결되어 저항개념의 범주를 크게 확장시키는 계기로 발전한다. 최근의 연구는 1944년 7 월 20일 저항의 ‘탈신화화’가 당시의 역사적 정황을 간과하는 ‘탈역사화’라 는 비판과 함께 재통일과 더불어 냉전적 체제 경쟁의 굴레에서 벗어난 보 다 역사화된 평가로 이어지고 있다. 이 논문은 전후 독일사회에서 전개된 나치즘에 대한 저항 기억의 추이를 고찰한다. 저항을 어떻게 기억하느냐가 독일의 과거청산을 가늠하는 하나 의 척도가 된다는 의미에서 이것은 전후 독일이 얼마큼 제3제국과 ‘다른 독일’로 나아갔는지를 추적하는 작업이다.

영문 초록

The resistance to national socialism turned its course and developed into a movement that sought after ‘the other Germany’ away from the Third Reich. It wasn t only different though. It had to be the other and also a better Germany. Despite its failure, the event of July 20, 1944 was the single biggest resistance endeavor that strived to overturn an existing regime and proposition a new one. This uprising was led by military leaders followed by civilians of diverse social stratum and involved assassination of Hitler himself as well as already appointed cabinet members. However, ‘the 20th of July’ as the symbol of resistance didn t work instantly as the basis at the start of ‘the other Germany’ after the fall of Nazis. The resistance fighters seldom survived the extreme oppression of the regime at the time and only could function as the spiritual basis of reconstruction by later generations. This could only be dependent on the changing views on the Third Reich by the government, academia and the public. In other words, the link between resistance and reconstruction has developed into a form of memory culture. The understanding and evaluation of the resistance is interdependent with how Germany faces up to its Nazi past. When the process of unframing itself from the treason and betrayal and rematerializing as ‘the other Germany’ has slowly progressed, the demythologization effort of July 20th came to the rise which criticized the alternatives mapped out by this resistance, while the relativization of this resistance led to the emergence of the significance of other resistances and expanded the scope of the concept of a resistance. Recent studies are reevaluating the demythologization of the resistance of July 20, 1944, where it is criticized as being dehistoricizing that overlooks the historical circumstances of the time and that it had freed itself from reunification as well as the vicious circle of cold war competitive settings. This paper contemplates on the trend of memory culture to national socialism in German society. As how we remember the resistance can be one of the measures of Germany’s effort to clean up its Nazi past, it is a process that tracks how much Germany progressed to be ‘the other Germany’ away from the Third Reich.
