국문 초록

바울의 자유는 개신교에서 매우 중요한 개념이다. 바울은 주로 율법과 관련하여 자유를 언급하는데, 이는 루터 신학에서 ‘율법으로부터의 자유’와 ‘사랑과 섬김의 자유’로 정식화되는 칭의론의 근간이 된다. 나아가 학계 곳곳에서 서구 자유주의가 여러 세계사적 현안들에 대한 해답이 아니라 원인으로 지목되는 가운데 기독교가 새로운 대안을 제시하기 위해서라도 바울의 자유는 깊이 연구할 가치가 있다. 그러나 역사 및 정치와의 접점을 상실한 채 개인의 내면에 초점을 맞추는 전통적인 칭의론과 자유 개념은 오늘날 산적한 전 지구적 문제들에 대해 적절한 대안이 되기에 역부족이다. 이러한 맥락에서 20세기 이후 바울 연구의 해석사를 추적하면서 이신칭의(以信稱義)와 자유가 어떻게 해석되어 왔는지 구성하는 작업은 바울의 ‘자유’와 관련하여 현재까지의 연구 동향을 점검하고앞으로의 연구 방향을 모색한다는 의미에서 유익할 것이다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 실존주의적 성서 해석에서 ‘바울에 관한 새 관점’(New Perspective on Paul)을 거쳐 남미의 해방신학과 북미의 사회정치적 성서 해석에 이르기까지 바울 서신과 율법 연구의 동향을 살펴보고, 그와 관련하여 각 단계에서 바울의 자유가 어떻게 이해되었는지, 각 해석은 당시 시대적 문제에 어떻게 응답했는지를 분석하고, 그 공헌과 한계를 짚으면서 바울의 자유 개념의 정치신학적 재건을 모색한다.

영문 초록

Paul’s ‘freedom’ is one of the important theological concepts in Protestantism. Paul refers to freedom mainly related to the Law, and it is represented by “Freedom from the Law” and “Freedom in Service,” forming the foundation of Justification. Justification can and should provide a critical lens on western liberalism which is considered to be a fundamental cause of many global issues today. All this requires studies of Paul’s notion of ‘freedom’. However, the traditional interpretation of Paul’s Justification and freedom, which focuses on the individuals’ internal sense of wellbeing and loses touch with history and politics, is not enough to help us with today’s global problems. Therefore, this article traces the history of the interpretation of Paul’s concept of freedom from an existentialist interpretation through the New Perspective on Paul to Latin American Liberation Theology and on to the North American sociopolitical interpretation of the New Testament. More specifically, it examines the current trend in the research on Paul’s letters and the Law to analyze how Paul’s freedom is understood at each level and how each interpretation responds to contemporary problems. The article assesses the contributions and limitations of each different approach, thereby contributing to a reconstruction of Paul’s concept of freedom from the perspective of political theology, and shaping the future direction of studies on this topic.
