국문 초록

본 연구는 ‘효’를 역사적 상황이나 시대적인 측면을 중심으로 해석하기보다는 현대에서도 유효하게 논의될 수 있는 부모와 자식 간의 관계를 통해 본 ‘효’의 본질에 대하여 밝히고자 하는 데 목적이 있다. ‘효’는 부모와 자식 간의 관계로부터 출발한다. 부모의 자식에 대한 사랑은 ‘자(慈)’로 표현되는데 이는 종족 보존을 위한 원초적인 사랑과 본능이기도 하지만 한 인간이 유전적으로 비슷한 타인을 물질적으로 보살피고 감정적으로 품는 일련의 삶의 과정이기도 하다. ‘효(孝)’의 전통적 의미는 다 자란 자식이 부모를 생각하며 부모의 뜻을 살피고 부모를 물질적으로 보필하는 데 있다. 어린 시기에는 부모의 영향이 절대적이나 아이가 자라면 부모는 아이에게 절대적인 존재가 아니라 독립적인 존재가 되며 이 시기부터 절대자로서의 부모에서 인간인 부모가 되는 전환의 시기이다. 이러한 것들을 생각할 때 ‘효’는 단순히 부모에게 받은 은혜를 되돌려 주는 것이 아니라 상호관계성 속에서 서로 부족한 부분을 품어주며 함께 살아가는 것이 ‘효’의 본래 의미라 볼 수 있다.

영문 초록

Xiao (孝; Filial Piety) is the main topic of Xiaojing (孝經; Classics of Filial Piety). Rather than interpreting the meaning of Xiao from the perspective of political circumstances and the characteristics of the times, this research focuses on the text of Xiaojing itself and aims to clarify the principal essence of xiao in the relationship between parents and children, which could be effectively discussed in modern times. Xiao originated in the relationship between parents and their children. The love of parents for their children is expressed as “Ci (慈; Maternal Love)” which could be studied not only from the perspective of the pure inherent love and instinct of preservation of the species, but also as a seriate process of an individual’s life of materialistic fosterage and the emotional nurture of a separate individual who carries genetic resemblance. The traditional meaning of Xiao is found in the acts of children who have grown to maturity when they think of their parents, consider the minds and feelings of their parents, and aid them materialistically. The influence of parents is initially absolute in childhood; however, the relationship changes as the children reach adulthood, and parents become independent, rather than absolute, beings for their children. Thus, both children and parents must go through the transitional period when parents renounce their position as absolute beings and attain the position of human beings. Based on such thoughts, Xiao does not merely concern returning the aid and grace of parents received in the early ages, but it could be claimed that the intrinsic meaning of Xiao further concerns living together by filling each other’s insufficiencies in the interrelationship between parents and children.
