국문 초록

이 글은 한국의 근대 학교교육이 겪은 ‘위기’를 시공간적으로 재구성해보는 것을 목표로 한다. 시안적이나마 학교교육의 위기사(史)로 명명해 볼 수 있다. 위기 앞에서 국가와 학교가 학생 생명을 어떻게 대해 왔는가를 중심으로 살펴보았다. 이 같은 문제의식의 출발점은 한편에서는 ‘가만히 있으라’라는 생명의 억압, 다른 한편에서는 성적에 따라 학생들을 촘촘히 서열화하는 생명의 차별화 조장, 바로 이 역설적인 두 서사가 학생들에게 작동하게 된 역사적 연원을 찾는 것이다. 교육외적으로는 역사적 위기가 교육현장에 위기를 초래한 세 번의 계기, 즉 첫째 외세에 의해 위기가 도래한 시기, 둘째, 군국주의 정권이 전쟁을 호출한 시기, 셋째, 전쟁과 분단으로 구축된 일상적 위기의 시기를 살펴보았다. 이때마다 국가와 학교는 학생들에게 ‘가만히 있으라’라는 주문을 통해 생명을 위태롭게 하고 생명력을 억압했다. 그리고 교육내부적으로는 입시위주교육이 학교를 서열화하고 학생들의 생명을 차별화하거나 입시기계화 하며 위기를 낳았다. 앞으로 한국교육은 학생들의 생명을 위협하거나 억압해왔던 상황에서 벗어나 생명의 존엄성과 다양성을 인정하고 모든 학생의 생명력을 고양시키는 방향으로 나아가야 한다. 한 사회의 책임은 새로운 생명들이 보존되는 속에서 그 새로움을 지키는 것이며, 이것이 세계에 대한 책임이고, 교육이다.

영문 초록

This article aims to reconstruct the crisis experienced by Korean education in time and space. Amid this crisis, this study investigated problems in education and students’ lives. The starting point of this problem consciousness is to find the historical origin of the two paradoxical narratives experienced by students, such as the restriction of life, “staying still,” and the promotion of life differentiation that closely ranks students according to grades. Outside of education, we examined three moments when historical crises hit the educational field: when a crisis was engendered by foreign powers, when the militaristic regime called for wars, and when a daily crisis was established by war and division. Education was also in crisis for each of these historical moments, and the state and schools jeopardized and suppressed students’ lives through orders to “stay still.” Additionally, it was noted that entrance examination-oriented education has played a role in ranking schools, differentiating students’ lives, and mechanizing entrance exams due to the internal crisis in education that remains consistent throughout time. To enhance the vitality of all students, education in a new era must escape the historical situation that has forced it to “stay still,” and the fixation of entrance examination education that has differentiated lives. It should be an indicator of crisis countermeasures that life s power, hybridity, diversity, and creativity should continue throughout generations.
