국문 초록

노헌 남건(1850~1943)은 조선조 말 경북 영해에서 태어나 대한제국과 일제강점기를 살다간 유학자이다. 그는 일제가 조선을 잠식해가는 과정에서 자기만의 방식으로 저항을 했다. 나라가 망하고 시대가 변해도 옛 나라의 전통과 선왕에 대한 의리를 지키며 평생을 살았다. 그는 경술국치 이후 은둔생활을 하면서 일제의 만행에 대해 폭로하고, 일제에 저항한 의사들의 충절을 입전하여 고요한 저항을 이어 나갔다. 남건은 역사 속에서 절의를 실천한 의사를 많이 추앙하며 유교의 강상이 무너지지 않게 했고, 이를 통해 자신의 마음을 다잡았다. 그리고 을사늑약 체결과 의병장의 순국, 경술국치와 신해혁명을 겪으면서도 그는 이성적으로 생각하며 한편으로 다음 시대를 위해 자제들을 가르치고, 한편으로 스스로 절개를 지켜나갔다. 하지만, 결국 절개를 지켜나가는 것도 자제들을 가르치는 것도 거스를 수 없는 역사의 흐름에서 한계라는 것을 인식하였다. 남건은 시대에 발 빠르게 대처하며 살아가진 않았지만, 망국의 유민으로서 식민지 세상에 영합하지 않고, 자신의 신념을 끝까지 지켜나가는 지조 있는 삶을 살았다. 이를 통해 일제강점기라는 특수한 시대에서 전통을 고수한 한 유학자의 고뇌가 어떠했는지 알 수 있다.

영문 초록

Nam Geon(pseudonym: Noheon, 1850~1943) was a Confucianist who was born in Yeonghae, Gyeongbuk, at the end of the Joseon Dynasty. He witnessed the whole history of the Korean Empire and then lived under Japanese colonial rule. He resisted to Korea’s annexation into the Empire of Japan in his own way. Even if his country lost national sovereignty, he lived his whole life keeping the old traditions and staying loyal to the former emperor. After the signing of the Annexation Treaty, he lived in seclusion, resisting to Japanese imperialism by exposing the atrocities of it and depicting the loyalty of the righteous men who also resisted it. Nam Geon expressed his reverence to many righteous men in history who stayed loyal, and was dedicated to keeping the Confucian doctrine from collapsing. He witnessed the signing of the Protectorate Treaty and the Annexation Treaty, the martyrdom of the generals of righteous armies and the Revolution of 1911, but he kept thinking rationally. He started to nurture disciples while maintaining moral integrity, although he finally realized that it had limitations in the irreversible tide of history. In face of the Japanese colonial rule, Nam Geon did not soon adapt to that. As an adherent of the former Empire, he did not succumb but stayed upright and loyal to the end. This embodied the agony of a Confucianist who adhered to tradition in a special era of Japanese colonial rule.
