국문 초록

19세기 문학은 창작과 비평의 방면에서 높이 발돋움하였던 18세기의 문학 수준에 바탕하면서도 전근대 말엽의 급속한 정치ㆍ사회ㆍ문화적 변화에 힘입어 새로운 전개 양상을 보인 시기로, 대체적으로 형이상학적 학문 담론이나 모방의 창작은 배격되는 반면, ‘實’의 문제가 중시되고 시대와 현실에 유용한 학문과 문장이 환영받던 시기였다. 이러한 분위기 속에서 경상북도 문경과 상주 일대에서 활동했던 영남 문인으로 錦洲 高夢贊(1793~1858)이 있다. 그는 청년 시절에는 과거 공부에 매진하다 끝내 벼슬하지 않고 초야에서 일생을 마쳤으나, 남다른 견식을 바탕으로 적지 않은 저술을 남긴 인물이다. 그는 개성과 내용이 결여된 시속의 문장에 염증을 느끼고, 자신만의 志趣와 개성에 맞는 작문 활동을 해나가려던 꼿꼿한 문장가였다. 금주는 관직에 나아가지 않고 재야에서 지내면서 本原 유학의 이념과 이치를 고구함으로써 학문적 역량을 연마하였으며, 원리와 이치를 정확하게 분석하고 이해하려는 학문 태도를 고수하며 학문적 관심의 연변을 넓혔다. 그는 학문적 이치를 때로는 자신을 둘러싼 세계를 이해하는 바탕으로 삼고, 때로는 현실의 부당함을 개선하고 시정하는 방안으로 활용하였다. 특히 그는 서민들의 측근에서 생활하며 그들과 함께 호흡한 터라 식자로서 민생의 질고에 대한 책임을 통감하였으니, 제도의 작폐를 논한 글을 통해서 위정자에게 개선을 요구하였고 민생의 고난을 읊은 대목에서는 백성의 아픔에 공감하는 지식인의 진정성을 담아 다친 백성들의 마음을 위로하였다. 이처럼 금주의 산문에는 19세기 전ㆍ중반 전근대 사회의 군상이 녹아 있고, 사회의 혼돈 속에서 굳건히 자리를 지키면서 민중의 혼란을 중재하고 민생의 질고를 위로하려 한 재야 지식인으로서의 소명의식이 깃들어 있다. 본고에서는 금주의 산문을 통해 평생을 재야에서 보냈으면서도, 결코 현실을 외면하지 않고 백성들의 삶을 애정어린 눈길로 쓰다듬은 그의 지식인으로서의 면모를 살펴보았다. 그의 저술에서 발견되는 識者로서의 책임의식과 애민정신이야말로 선비정신의 산물이며, 이것이 곧 금주의 문학이 가지는 가치이자 정수일 것이다.

영문 초록

Based in the foundation of literature from the 18th century which had highly grown in terms of creation and criticism, literature of the 19th century showed a new development along with the rapidly changing political, social, and cultural changes that appeared at the end of the pre-modern period. During this period, metaphysical academic discussion and creation of imitation used to be rejected, while a matter of practicality(實) came to the fore and accordingly, practical studies and writings were treated favorably. In this trend of the period, there was Geumju Go Mongchan(錦洲 高夢贊, 1793~1858), a confucian scholar based in Yeongnam region, particularly in Mungyeong and Sangju, Gyeongsangbuk-do. In the days of his youth, he devoted himself to studying for Gwageo(科擧), the civil service examination, but didn t enter the government service, but finished his life out of power. Nevertheless, he left many outstanding writings, based in his extraordinary insight and knowledge. He was a strong-willed writer who felt repulsion towards insipid, substanceless sentences in vogue at that time and therefore, tried to push ahead with his own style of characterful writings. Instead of getting into government, he dedicated himself to exploration into the origin of Confucianism principles, and extension of the domain of his knowledge by making efforts to clearly analyze and understand Confucian principles and reasons. He sometimes took academic reasons as the basis for understanding his surrounding world, and sometimes, as a tool to improve the unfairness of reality. Especially since he lived closely with ordinary people, he completely empathized with their difficult lives. This experience led him to request politicians to improve the systems through his writings about the problems of the current systems and comfort the people through his sincere writings about the people s tough livelihood, as an intellectual. This way, his prose writings show the portrait of those days that used to suffer from growing pains resulting from rapid development and changes in the early- and mid-19th century, and at the same time, Geumju s strong sense of vocation to mediate the people s confusions by standing upright in the middle of such a chaotic society and also comfort their tough lives, as an intellectual out of power. The purpose of this study was to look into the spirit and upright aspects of Geumju as an intellectual who didn t neglect reality, but affectionately comfort the people s tough lives throughout his lifetime, although he was not in a position of political power, through his prose writings. It is considered that his strong sense of responsibility and love for the people are the true fruit of Confucian scholar s spirit, and this is literally the essence of his literature.
