太賢의 『成唯識論學記』에 나타난 논리주의 전통

국문 초록

太賢의 『成唯識論學記』(이하 ‘『學記』’)에는 선대의 『成唯識論』 주석가들의 논리주의 전통의 복잡하고 난해한 유산이 담겨있다. 특히 他 學派의 실재론을 논파하는 대목에서는, 모든 철학의 문제들을 논리학의 방법으로만 재단하는 논리주의의 전형적 특징이 잘 드러난다. 이 글에서는, 『學記』의 두 가지 사례를 분석함으로써, 태현이 어떠한 학문적 태도와 역량을 가지고 선대의 논리주의 전통을 계승했는지를 살펴보았다. 태현은 중국 유식논사들에게 많은 영향을 미친 불교논리학[因明]에 정통한 학자였을 것으로 추정된다. 그는 자기 나름의 논리적 판단에 의거해서, 窺基와 圓測 등과 같은 선대 주석가들의 해석들에서 발견되는 논리적 오류를 냉정하게 비판하였다. 이를 통해 우리가 알 수 있는 것은, 논리적 문제에 관한 한, 선대 학자들에 대한 태현의 평가 혹은 인용 빈도수 등은 단지 그의 논리적 판단을 나타내는 것일 뿐 누군가에 대한 철학적 경도를 의미하지 않는다는 것이다. 또 태현은 번쇄한 설명을 피하고, 선명한 논지로 핵심 요점만 간략히 서술하였다. 가령 규기의 『樞要』의 해석들에 대한 잦은 혹평에서 드러나듯, 그는 선대 학자들의 무익한 장광설들을 가차 없이 배제시킨다. 이러한 태현의 학문적 태도와 냉정한 판단에 의거해서 저술된 『學記』는 후대의 『成唯識論』 연구자들에게는 양면적 의미를 지닌다. 우선, 단점은 『學記』의 지나치게 간략한 주석 문장들이 쉽게 이해되지 않는다는 것이다. 반면, 그의 냉정한 논리적 판단들은, 후학들로 하여금 선대 학자들의 번쇄하고 혼란스러운 논쟁들에 자신의 지력을 소진시키지 않고 가능한 한 빨리 ‘唯識’이라는 진정한 철학적 문제로 관심을 돌릴 수 있게 해준다.

영문 초록

Seongyusikronhakgi by Taehyeon contains the complex and elusive legacy of traditional logicism from Seongyusikron(成唯識論) exegete of the previous generation. In particular, in the section refuting the realism of other schools, it showcases the stereotypical characteristic of logicism which interprets all philosophical problems with only methods of logics. By analyzing two cases of Hakgi, this article attempted to identify how Taehyeon succeeded the logicism of the previous generation with which academic attitude and capability. Taehyeon was a master scholar in Buddhist logics, which had significant influence on Chinese Consciousness-Only scholars. He utilized his own logical foundation to criticize the logical error found in exegete of the previous generation, such as Gyugi(窺基) and Woncheuk(圓測). What can be found through such is that in terms of logical problems, the assessment and number of quotes made of Taehyeon from scholars of the previous generation were only a reference that reflected his logical judgment, not a philosophical devotion towards someone. In addition, Taehyeon limited the amount of troublesome explanations and described main agendas with clear logic. As shown in the frequent critique about the interpretation of Chuyo(樞要) by Gyugi, he removes unnecessary and troublesome tirades of scholars of the previous generation. Hakgi, which was written with such academic attitude and objective judgment of Taehyon, embody a double-sided significance to researchers of Seongyusikron of future generations. The weakness Hakgi is the fact that the over-simplified annotations are difficult to understand. However, the objective logical judgments allowed future scholars to focus their attention on the true philosophical problem, consciousness-only(唯識), promptly without exhausting their intelligence with troublesome and confusing of the previous generation.
