근대 척독교본의 저작권과 생산과정의 문제, 그리고 장르 젠더화의 의미

국문 초록

근대 척독교본은 20세기 전반기의 베스트셀러 중 하나로, 한문 서간을 쓰기 위한 학습 교본이다. 본고는 이 책이 오랜 기간 ‘많이 팔리는 책’이었다는 사실의 의미를 탐구하고, 척독교본의 구매라는 현상을 통해 당대인들의 집단적 필요와 감수성, 사회적 욕망과 가치관을 살펴보고자 했다. 이를 위해 우선 척독교본의 제작 과정에서 출판업자에게 저작권을 헐값에 넘겨야 했던 생계형 하위지식인으로서의 무명저자의 존재를 읽어내고, 이들에게 ‘모방과 중복 수록, 분담 창작’의 집필 방식이 활용될 수밖에 없었음을 지적했다. 이러한 방식은 텍스트의 질적 저하와 낮은 사회적 평가로 이어졌지만 대신 상업성은 확실하게 보장하는 방법이었다. 이러한 척독교본은 문인, 기자, 근대 지식인 그룹에게 멸시와 폄하의 대상이었다. 이는 낮은 저자 의식과 삼류 출판물이라는 인상, 한문투 문체의 구시대적 인상, 타자화된 한문 문체에 대한 시선 등이 복합적으로 작용한 결과였다. 그럼에도 불구하고 척독교본은 순한문과 국한문체에서 현대 국어에 이르기까지 급격한 문체 변화를 보여주면서 다수의 대중들에게 오랜 시간 활용되었다. 특히 40년대 이후 척독교본은 현저한 한글 중심의 문체 변화를 보인다. 한글화는 두 가지 현상을 수반했는데, 그 첫째는 여성 대상 편지 예문의 확대, 둘째는 표지에서의 여성 도상의 잦은 등장이다. 이에 대해 본고는 ‘한글이라는 표기체계의 젠더성’과 ‘편지 쓰는 주체로서의 여성의 유표화’가 결합된 현상이라고 보고, 이는 편지가 ‘여성적 장르’이며 ‘여성이 쓰는 것’이라는 젠더화된 이미지를 강조하고자 한 사회적 시선의 반영이라고 해석해 보았다. 마지막으로 척독교본의 한글화가 여성의 문식성 확대의 계기와 결합되는 지점을 언급했다. 한글 편지 쓰기는 근대 교육에서 소외된 구여성들에게 문식성 획득 및 실행의 계기가 되었다. 상허나 춘원같은 초엘리트들의 고급 지식으로서의 근대문학이 ‘남성화’되는 이면에서 ‘여성화되고 비체화된 편지 양식’은 구여성들이 문식성을 획득하고 사회적 관계를 맺을 수 있게 하는 수단이 되어주었다. 척독교본의 시장 확대와 한글화 및 여성화의 과정은 이러한 편지 양식의 사회적 의미와 변화를 증언해주는 문학사회학적 현상으로 가치가 있다.

영문 초록

The modern Chinese letter(Chukdok, 尺牘) textbooks are bestsellers purchased by many people from the 1900s to the 1950s. These books are practical books that help to write formal letters in Chinese sentences. This thesis aimed to explore the meanings of the fact in which these books are ‘the books sold a lot’ for a long time because the bestsellers reflect the collective needs, sensibility, social desires, and values of people of the time. The authors of Chinese letter textbooks were the famous publishers in the 20th century. However, the actual authors were unknown writers from the low-class intellectuals for subsistence, so they often handed over their copyrights to publishers for dirty cheap price. As they had to make money quickly, they easily wrote manuscripts in the methods of ‘imitation, duplicate inclusion, and alloted creation’. Even though such methods lowered the quality of texts and social evaluation of Chinese letter textbooks, instead, they accurately met the readers’ needs and also guaranteed the commerciality. Since the 1940s, the writing method of Chinese letter textbooks has been almost changed to the Hangeul(Korean alphabet)-centered. This change of Chinese letter textbooks to Hangeul occurred together with two phenomena such as first, the expanded example sentences of letters by female writers and second, the frequent appearance of female icons on book covers. This thesis viewed this as a phenomenon combined with the ‘gender of writing system in Hangeul’ and the ‘markedness of women as subjects who write letters’. This was understood as the reflection of social gaze emphasizing the gendered image of letters as ‘feminine genre’. Lastly, this thesis mentioned the point where the change of Chinese letter textbooks to Hangeul was combined with the expansion of women’s literacy. Writing letters provided a chance to get and practice the literacy to many old-fashioned women alienated from the opportunity of modern education. The market expansion of Chinese letter textbooks, and the process of writing in Hangeul and feminization of letters are valuable as a literary-sociological phenomenon.
