국문 초록

본고는 근대 전환기에 활동한 여성 지식인인 최송설당(1855～1939)의 󰡔송설당집(松雪堂集)󰡕을 중심으로 20세기 초 여성 지식인의 시각으로 본 서울 공간을 고찰하였다. 송설당은 근대 전환기에 집안의 복원을 위해, 그리고 일제 치하의 조선을 위해 활동한 지식인으로, 당시 급변하는 정세를 파악하고 육영사업 등의 사회활동을 통해 국난을 극복하고자 하였다. 또한 그는 생전에 자신이 창작한 한시, 국문 시가 등의 작품과 주변의 명사들에게 받은 작품을 수록하여 문집을 편찬하였다. 20세기에 문집을 엮고 이를 발간했다는 점에서 조선의 명맥을 유지한 근대의 여성 작가로 볼 수 있다. 본고에서는 송설당이 가문의 복원을 위해 상경하였으며, 출궁 이후에도 서울에 거주하며 사회활동에 참여했다는 점에 착안하여 그의 문집을 통해 여성 지식인으로서 근대 전환기의 서울을 인식한 양상을 살펴보았다. 그의 생애를 고려하였을 때 그에게 있어 서울이라는 곳은 가문 복원이라는 목표를 달성하는 공간이었으며, 열강의 침탈과 일제의 침략으로 급변하는 시대 상황을 인식하게 하여 그에게 사회활동이라는 또 다른 목표를 설정하게 한 공간이었다. 또한 그에게 있어 서울은 식민지의 수도이자 위기에 처한 국가의 상황을 인식하게 하는 공간이었다. 따라서 본고는 송설당의 문집에 수록된 작품을 통해 송설당이 여성 지식인으로서 당시 서울을 어떻게 인식했는지에 대해 알아보았다. 본고에서 송설당의 문집을 중심으로 여성 지식인이 서울, 즉 외부 세계를 인식하는 양상을 살펴본 이유는 다음과 같다. 조선 후기까지 여성 지식인들의 활동 영역은 대체로 규방 안으로 제한되어 있었다. 이 때문에 학문을 연구하거나 외부 세계를 인식하는 데 있어 여성으로서의 한계를 인식하고 이를 극복하고자 하였다. 그러나 송설당이 활동하던 시기에는 국권 침탈과 함께 구국 운동이 일어나면서 여성의 활동 범위가 규방 밖으로 확대되었다. 따라서 본고에서는 송설당의 문집을 통해 여성 지식인이 규방 밖의 세계를 바라보는 방식의 변화 양상을 탐색하였다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to examine the space and the meaning of Seoul from the perspective of female intellectual focused on songseoldangjip(松雪堂集) of Choi Songseoldang(1855～1939) in the period to modern era. Songseoldang was active for rebuilding the family fortunes and Korea under Japanese Rule living in Seoul during the modern transitional period. She tried to overcome the national crisis by understanding the rapidly changing circumstances and acting in society such as educational works. And also she collected works given by coworkers as well as her own, Chinese poems and poetry, etc., and published a collection of works in her life. She did it in the 20th century. It could be said she is a modern woman writer who kept Joseon alive. This study noticed that Songseoldang came up to the capital to rebuild the family fortunes and participated in social activities with living in Seoul even after leaving the palace. And it tried to examine how she recognized Seoul as a female intellectual at the turning periods to modern times in her works. Considering her life, Seoul was the space to achieve the goal of restoring the family fortunes for her, and to set the goal of working in society with making her recognize the rapidly changing circumstances caused by the Western invasions and Japanese aggression after achieving the goal. Also for Songseoldang, Seoul was the capital of the colony and a place to remind him of the situation of a country in crisis. Thus, this study tried to examine how she recognized Seoul as a female intellectual then through Songseoldang’s works collected in her collection series. The reasons for examining how female intellectuals perceive the outside world, focusing on Song Seoldang s collections of literature, are as follows. Until the late Joseon Dynasty, the activities of female intellectuals were generally limited to the inside of the confines. For this reason, they tried to overcome the limitations of being a woman in researching studies or perceiving the outside world. However, when Songseoldang was active, the scope of women s activities was expanded beyond the confines of the realm. Moreover it searched the changing phases of the way in which a female intellectual look at the world out of women’s quarters.
