울산 반구대암각화의 가치와 의미

국문 초록

반구대암각화는 사냥을 생업으로 삼던 사람들이 남긴 것이다. 암각화를 새긴 기법이나 암각 대상이 달라지는 것은 암각화가 몇 차례에 걸쳐 새로 새겨졌고, 암각을 남긴 사람들도 바뀌었기 때문이다. 사냥 대상이 달라진 것은 시기에 따라 울산지역의 기후·환경이 달라진 까닭일 것이다. 반구대암각화는 사냥 도구와 사냥 방법이 바뀌었다는 사실을 확인시켜 준다. 암각화에는 초식 동물 사냥에 활을 사용하고, 고래 사냥에 작살을 썼음을 알게 하는 장면이 묘사되어 있다. 암각화로 여러 사람이 타는 카누형의 배가 고래 사냥에 쓰였다는 사실도 알 수 있다. 사람들이 반구대 바위에 암각화를 새긴 것은 바위에 신비한 힘이 있다고 믿었기 때문이다. 바위에 사냥 대상 동물을 새기며 신에게 빌면 그것이 실제 붙잡힌다고 여겼던 까닭이다. 사냥꾼 사회에서 보편적으로 확인되는 수평적 세계관이 반구대암각화에서도 확인된다. 반구대암각화에 새겨진 ‘고래를 부르는 듯한 사람과 수족과장형 인물’은 고래를 사냥하던 사람들이 수평적 세계관에 바탕을 둔 사회에 속했음을 보여주는 존재일 수 있다. 반구대암각화는 이 작품을 남긴 사냥꾼 사회가 공동체 문화를 유지하고 있었음을 보여준다. 반구대암각화는 예술적 감각과 표현 기법이 변화하는 과정도 잘 보여준다. 비교적 단순하게 외형만 나타냈던 암각 대상이 시대의 변화에 따라 모두 파기로 특징이 드러나면서 간단한 서사의 일부가 되기도 하고, 조감도식 구성과 표현으로 복잡하고도 구체적인 서사의 한 부분이 되기도 한다. 마지막 단계의 암각은 대상의 특징이 구체적이고 세밀하게 표현되어 새로 새겨진 맹수들이 서사의 주체로 등장한다. 반구대암각화는 신앙을 형상화한 점에서 주목할 만한 작품이다. 반구대암각화를 새긴 사람들은 신앙을 형상화하면 관념이 재구성, 재정립될 수 있다는 사실을 잘 알고 있었던 듯하다. 반구대암각화는 마을 단위의 정기적인 제의 과정에서 펼쳐지는 서사의 풀이, 특정한 금기와 행위에 대한 공동체의 동의와 다짐을 확인시켜 주는 작품으로 해석할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Bangudae Petroglyphs was created by people who hunted as primary means of survival. The carving techniques and the subjects vary because the petroglyphs were carved multiple different times by different people. The game likely changed because the climate of Ulsan region shifted over time. Bangudae Petroglyphs confirm that the hunting tools and methods changed. Some of the carved scenes describe people using bows to hunt herbivores and harpoons on whales. They also show that a canoe-like ship for multiple people was used for whaling. People carved petroglyphs on the rocks of Bangudae because they believed the rocks had special powers, thinking that offering prayers to gods while engraving the game would lead to a catch. The horizontal worldview that is characteristic of hunting societies is also present in the Bangudae Petroglyphs. The figure that seems to be calling whales and another figure with exaggerated limbs suggest that the whalers may have belonged to a society based on a horizontal view of the world. The petroglyphs show that the hunters who carved the images had maintained a communal culture. Bangudae Petroglyphs also provide a clear view into how the aesthetics and expressive techniques evolved over time. The simple motifs that just represented the shapes evolve into a more distinctive carvings that are part of a short narrative or an overlooking view of an composition that comprise a complex story. Petroglyphs of the late stages showcase detailed and distinctive carnivores as the main subjects. Bangudae Petroglyphs is remarkable in that it is a manifestation of a belief system. The creators of the petroglyphs semed to have been aware that materializing their beliefs could reorganize and reestablish concepts. Bangudae Petroglyphs could be understood as a work that confirms a group’s agreement and reinforcement of special acts and taboos as well as narratives that develop during a regular rituals.
