국문 초록

위베르틴 오클레르의 여성참정권 운동과 프랑스 내 북아프리카계 이민자 가정의 2, 3세대 여성들이 벌인 NPNS 운동은 각각 19세기 말, 20세기 말 시대 코드에 저항했던 운동이다. 약 한 세기의 시간적 간격을 갖는 이 두 운동은 프랑스의 국시라 할 수 있는 공화주의 이념의 현실적 구현의 문제와 연결되어 있다. 본고에서는 이 두 운동을 프랑스 고유의 공화주의에 내재한 보편주의와 동화주의 이념과 연결하여 분석하였다. 프랑스 공화주의에 깊은 신뢰를 보내던 오클레르는 제3공화정의 문명화 사명 명분과 공화주의적 보편주의 틀을 훼손하지 않는 범위에서 프랑스 여성의 권리를 주장하는 데 이론적으로 성공하였다. 오클레르의 여성참정권 운동의 본질은 성차를 인종차로 대체한 것이라 평가할 수 있다. 한편으로 한 세기 후 탈식민의 북아프리카계 이민자 가정 여성이 벌이는 NPNS 운동은 자신들에게 쏠리는 의심의 시선에 저항하면서 현실의 문제는 동화라는 관념적 장치가 아니라 사회경제적으로 소외되어 게토화한 방리유에 스며든 마초이즘과 이슬람 근본주의라고 경고하였다. 이 여성들도 동질성과 평등, 보편의 언어로 공화주의를 지지하면서, 성차뿐 아니라 인종차까지도 초월하는 공화주의적 보편을 방리유에 적극 도입해 줄 것을 요구하고 있다. 프랑스의 공화주의적 보편주의나 동화주의는 18세기 말 혁명 이래 프랑스 페미니스트들에게 걱정스럽고도 모호한 유산을 남겨주었다. 모든 담론은 주어진 시대의 산물로 변화할 수 있고 비판받을 수 있다. 이 두 운동을 비교, 탐구하는 것은 시대의 갈등과 딜레마를 드러내면서 억압의 신발 끈을 슬쩍 풀어 제 발로 넘어지게 만드는 작은 시도가 될 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

Hubertine Auclert’s work for the acquisition of French women’s suffrage, and the NPNS movement which was launched by the North African immigrant young women in France, are woman s movements that resisted the age code of the late 19th and the late 20th century. These two movements, which have a time gap of one century, are connected to the practical realization problem of the French Republicanism. This study analyzes the two campaigns, linking with universalism and assimilation inherent in France s unique republicanism. Auclert, who has a deep trust in the French republicanism, succeeded in claiming the suffrage right of French women in a range that does not undermine the civilization mission of the third Republic and the frame of republican universalism. It would be appreciated that the essence of Auclert’s women suffrage campaign is a substitution of racial difference for sexual difference. About one century later, the North African immigrant young women’s NPNS movement is a warning that the real problem is not a conceptual device of assimilation but machoism and Islamic fundamentalism that has been permeating in the ghettoized Banlieue. These women supporting French republicanism in the words of sameness, equality and universality, demand that the government should aggressively introduce the policies of republicanism universalism which transcends ethnic and religious differences to the banlieus. The republican universalism and assimilation of France have indeed left an ambiguous and worrying legacies for French feminists since the era of French Revolution. All discourse is the product of a given era. Exposing discords and dilemmas of the two women’s movements, this study secretly unties the shoelaces of oppression to make it trip over its shoes.
