국문 초록

본 연구는 미·중 관계와 세계질서 변화에 직면하여 대서양 관계가 어떻게 발전할 것인가라는 질문을 제기하고 대서양주의의 기원과 발전에 대해서 살펴보고 있다. 대서양 관계에 관한 역사적 고찰을 통해 대서양 관계가 가치 지향적인 동맹 관계인지 아니면 전략적 이해관계인지를 규명해 본다. 긴 역사적 관점에서 대서양 관계의 발전과정을 살펴보면, 국제정세의 변화와 함께 대서양주의 개념과 대서양 관계의 성격은 다양한 모습을 보여 왔다. 소위 대서양 관계가 ‘황금시대(Golden Age) 를 구가했다고 설명하는 냉전 시기에서조차 대서양 관계는 세계문제 해결 및 공공의 적에 대해서는 협력관계를 보였지만 일정한 영역에서는 팽팽한 경쟁 관계를 보여 왔다. 대서양 관계는 다양한 원칙, 실용적인 이해관계에 그리고 가치에 기초한 동맹의 성격을 모두 나타내고 있다. 이와 같은 시각에서 본 연구는 구체적이고 심도 있는 역사적 고찰을 통해 대서양주의의 기원과 대서양 관계에서 보이는 다양한 변화의 성격을 살펴보고자 한다.

영문 초록

This study raises the question of how Atlantic relations will develop in the face of changes in US-China relations and the world order, and examines the origin and development of Atlanticism. Through a historical examination of the Atlantic relationship, it is investigated whether the Atlantic relationship is a value-oriented alliance or a strategic interest. Looking at the development of Atlantic relations from a long historical perspective, the concept of Atlanticism and the nature of Atlantic relations have shown various appearances along with changes in the international situation. Even in the Cold War period, when the so-called Atlantic relationship was described as having entered the “Golden Age”, the Atlantic relationship showed a cooperative relationship with respect to solving world problems and against common enemies, but in certain areas, it has shown a tight competitive relationship. The Atlantic Relations represent the nature of an alliance based on a variety of principles, pragmatic interests, and values. In this perspective, the study aims to examine the origins of Atlanticism and the nature of various changes seen in Atlantic relations through detailed and in-depth historical considerations.
