국문 초록

본 연구는 인류문화사의 관점에서 특정 언어, 특히 인도유럽어족에 속하는 몇몇 주요 언어들의 요일 명칭을 집중적으로 살펴본다. 그런데 ‘7일 1주 시스템’의 요일 명칭 중 ‘수요일’에 해당하는 영어의 Wednesday, 독일어의 Mittwoch, 프랑스어의 mercredi가 조어론, 언어사, 명칭론의 관점에서 특별히 상세하게 다루어진다. 이를 통해 본 연구자는 ‘수요일’에 해당하는 영어, 독일어, 프랑스어의 요일 명칭이 어떤 어휘-의미적 명명 동기(또는 아이코넴)를 가졌는지, 어떤 어원적 뿌리에서 유래했는지, 어떤 조어 방식으로 형성되었는지, 어떤 통시적 변천 과정을 겪었는지, 어떤 문화전파의 경로로 차용되었는지, 해당 언어권에 속했던 그리고 속한 문화구성원의 어떤 세계관, 종교관, 인생관 등을 반영하고 있는지를 밝히고자 한다.

영문 초록

This paper concentrates on the designations of the days of week in specific languages, above all, in some major languages belonging to the Indo-European language family from the perspective of human-cultural history. However, among the designations of the days of week in the ‘seven-day week system’, Wednesday in English, Mittwoch in German, and mercredi in French, which correspond to the concept of Wednesday, are dealt with in detail from the point of view of word-formation, language history, and onomasiology. Through this, first of all I try to answer the following questions: First, which lexical-semantic designation motives (iconem) are there in Wednesday in English, Mittwoch in German, and mercredi in French corresponding to the concept of Wednesday? Second, which etymological roots did they stem from? Third, by which types of word formation were they formed? Fourth, which diachronic transition process have they gone through? Fifth, which cultural transmission were they borrowed from? Sixth, which view of the world, which view of religion, and which view of life is reflected in them?
