국문 초록

본 논문은 20세기 초 일제강점기 때 만주로 망명을 떠난 지식인들이 망명지에서 겪은 풍속 체험에 대해 살펴본 것이다. 만주 망명 지식인들은 자신들이 할 수 있는 역할을 찾기 위해 망명을 떠나왔으나 조국의 독립을 위해 할 수 있는 일을 찾기보다 생존에 먼저 힘써야 했다. 평생 책만 읽던 그들은 망명지에서 의식주를 비롯해 결혼문화와 장례문화 등 다양한 풍속을 체험을 했다. 그러나 그들은 망명 생활에 적응하기 위해 태어나서 처음으로 직접 농사도 짓고 땔감도 하고, 추위와 비적 떼의 습격 등에서 벗어나기 위해 노력했다. 이에 더해 중국어를 익히는 등 끊임없이 적응하고자 노력했고, 자신들은 물론 한인들의 생활규범을 단속함과 동시에 조국 독립이라는 목표 앞에서 학파와 계파를 떠나 화합에 힘썼다. 만주 망명 지식인들이 힘겨운 망명지 풍속에 적응하고 망명 생활에 적응하며 버틸 수 있던 저력은 바로 평생 익힌 학문에서 나온 것이다. 고국에서 일제에 빌붙어 잇속을 챙긴 친일 지식인들과 달리 만주 망명 지식인들은 참된 지식인들이었기 때문에 그들은 온갖 고생을 하면서도 그것을 전혀 고달프게 생각하지 않았다. 오히려 나라가 망했는데 죽지 않고 살아있는 것에 대한 죄책감으로 망명지에서 겪는 고생을 당연한 것으로 받아들였다. 그들의 망명 생활이 성공을 거둔 사실은 망명 지식인들 가운데 많은 인물이 독립유공자로 지정된 사실을 통해서 확인된다. 우리는 만주 망명 지식인들의 풍속 체험과 그들이 이를 극복하기 위해 노력하는 모습을 통해 해외에서 항일 투쟁에 힘쓰던 독립운동가들의 일상을 일부 엿볼 수 있다. 이에 더해 만주 망명 지식인들이 다져놓은 만주 망명지는 후에 만주로 망명을 떠나온 또 다른 지식인들과 독립운동가들의 터전이 되었다는 점에서 가치를 더한다는 점에서 주목받아 마땅하다.

영문 초록

This paper is about the customs what the intellectuals had experienced who exiled to Manchuria in the Japanese colonial period. They had to put striving for living before than seeking their roles as intellectuals which is they exiled for at the first place. They encountered various customs such as food, clothing and shelter, marriage, and funeral culture in Manchuria. For the first time in their bookworm life, in order to adapt to life in exile they farmed, cut firewood, and tried to escape from the cold and attacks of swarms. In addition, they constantly tried to adapt, such as learning Chinese, and while cracking down on the rules of life of Koreans as well as themselves, they worked hard to achieve harmony by leaving schools and factions in front of the goal of national independence. The power that made the them survive while adapting to the difficult customs and lifestyles of exile came from the studies they learned throughout their lives. Unlike the pro-Japanese intellectuals who took advantage of the Japanese occupation in their home country, the intellectuals in Manchuria didn t feel tired with all sorts of hardships as true intellectuals. Rather, they took for granted the suffering in exile because of the guilt of living and not dying even though their own country had collapsed. The success of their exile life is confirmed by the fact that many of the exiled intellectuals were designated as independence fighters. Through the experiences of the intellectuals in exile in Manchuria and their efforts to overcome them, we can get a glimpse into the daily life of independence activists who worked hard in the anti-Japanese struggle abroad. In addition, the Manchuria built by the exiled intellectuals deserves attention as exile site in that it adds value in that it later became the home of other intellectuals and independence activists who fled to Manchuria.
