국문 초록

이 연구의 목적은 벤야민의 ‘순수 수단’(pure means)에 ‘내재된 발전의 역량’을 발전시킨 아감벤의 ‘수단성’에 대한 연구를 통하여, 아감벤이 주장하는 ‘순수 수단’에 의한 윤리와 정치를 독해하려는 것이다. 아리스토텔레스에 따르면, 인간의 잠재성은 자신의 ‘작동하지 않음’인 비잠재성을 수용할 때, 진정한 잠재성, ‘순수 잠재성’으로 드러난다. 아감벤은 벤야민의 ‘순수 수단’으로부터 목적 연관속의 구체적인 수단이 ‘작동하지 않음’을 통하여 수단의 ‘자기 지시’가 발생한다는 것을 읽어낸다. 어떠한 전제도 없이 수단의 ‘작동하지 않음’으로 수단이 수단으로 ‘불리는’ 것이 ‘순수 수단’이며 ‘수단 자체’(itself)이다. ‘수단 자체’에서 수단을 다시 가리키는 ‘재귀적’(itself)인 ‘윤리’(e-thos)와 자기 지시가 발생한다. 하이데거의 ‘심한 따분함’에서 볼 수 있듯이, 구체적인 현실의 가능성(수단)이 작동하지 않을 때, 가능성 자체(수단 자체)가 드러난다. 아감벤은 이 가능성(수단)을 ‘새로이, 다르게, 환속적으로, 공용으로 사용’할 것을 주장한다. 벤야민의 ‘순수 수단’적인 ‘순수 폭력’의 형식으로 드러나는 ‘프롤레타리아 총파업’은 아감벤이 주장하는 윤리와 정치의 예가 될 것이다. 우리는 ‘프롤레타리아 총파업’에 대한 ‘가장 진지하고 교육적인 패러디’를 사드의 ‘도착’적 주인공들로부터 읽어낼 수 있다. 사드의 주인공들은 생리학적 신체를 성적 쾌락의 신체로 ‘새로이, 다르게, 환속적으로, 공용으로’ 사용한다. 사드의 ‘수단의 공화국’은 먹는 입이 키스하는 입으로 ‘사용’될 때 가능하다.

영문 초록

The aim of this paper is to clarify Agamben’s ethics and politics based on ‘pure means’ through a reading of his idea of means that has developed ‘capacity for development’ contained in Benjamin’s ‘pure means.’ According to Aristotle, human potentiality is exposed as ‘pure potentiality’ when it accommodates its inoperativity, im-potentiality. From Benjamin’s ‘pure means’ which renders inoperative a concrete and real means connected to an end, Agamben reads out exposure of self-reference of means. Without any presupposition, by the way of its inoperativity, what is called ‘pure means’ or ‘means itself’ happens. In ‘means itself’ where ‘itself’ refers again the preceding means, ‘reflexive’ ethos and self-reference of means happen. As in Heidegger’s ‘profound boredom,’ when a concrete and real possibility (means) is made inoperative, possibility itself (means itself) is exposed. Agamben proposes to put this possibility (means) into a ‘new, different, profane, common use.’ Benjamin’s proletarian general strike’ in which Benjamin’s pure violence as an example of ‘pure means’ is exposed can be an example of what Agamben calls ethics and politics based on ‘pure means.’ We can read ‘the most serious and instructive parady’ of ‘proletarian general strike’ in Sade’s characters of perversions. By converting physiological bodies into bodies full of sexual pleasures, Sade’s perverts put bodies into a ‘new, different, profane, common use.’ Sade’s republic of means will be realized when an eating mouth is used as a kissing mouth.
