애덤 스미스의 심미적 관조와 영성 지능의 논리

국문 초록

본 연구는 『도덕감정론』에 등장하는 “공정한 관찰자”를 통해 애덤 스미스의 공감(sympathy)의 윤리학에서 구현된 영성 지능의 핵심 논리와 구체적 실천 양태를 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 여기서 말하는 영성 지능은 영혼의 층위에서 자신과 타자 그리고 세계의 실재를 있는 그대로 바라보고 그것을 기반으로 의미와 목적을 추구하면서 삶을 풍요롭게 살아가는 능력을 지칭한다. 자연주의 신학과 스토아 철학 그리고 영국 경험주의 이성의 고차원적 결합을 체현하는 공정한 관찰자는 자기중심적 자아를 초월하여 더 큰 성스러운 존재와의 접속을 통해 자신과 연결된 사물과 사태(맥락)의 본질을 바라보면서 적정성(propriety)의 논리 하에 그에 대한 합당한 판단과 응답 그리고 행위를 가능하게 하는 심미적 관조의 기반이 된다. 관점의 층위에 따라 변화하는 봄과 보여짐의 변증법적 이중 운동으로 구성되어 있는 심미적 관조는 여러 층위와 관점에서 자신(타자성에 의해 이미 존재론적으로 분화된 자아)과 타자 그리고 세계를 연결하는 윤리적이면서 창조적인 공감과 소통의 관계망을 구축한다. 그러한 심미적 관조의 지혜를 담은 『도덕감정론』은 사유의 편협함과 피상성으로 점철된 속물 사회에서 외부 환경 변화에 흔들리지 않고 자기 중심을 지키면서 행복을 추구할 수 있는 영성 지능의 교본, 즉 현자의 텍스트로 지칭할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This study aims to examine the logic and specific practices of spiritual intelligence embodied in Adam Smith’s ethics of “sympathy” by focusing on the notion of the “impartial spectator.” Spiritual intelligence refers to the ability to see oneself, the other, and the realities of the world as they are at the level of the soul and to live life to the full while pursuing meaning and purpose based on an enlightened perspective. Smith’s concept of an impartial spectator embodies a high-level combination of natural theology, stoic philosophy, and modern British empirical reason, and can be also called the sacred observer (judge) within ourselves, that is, the conscience and the soul. This impartial spectator constitutes the basis of aesthetic meditation (observance) that enables us to respond and act appropriately to events based on the logic of propriety, by transcending the limitations of the self-centered ego and journeying toward a connection with a Larger Self. Such an aesthetic observance, composed of the dynamic dialectical double movement of “seeing and being seen” and triggered by changes in the levels of perspective (I-the other-world-universe), can construct ethical and creative networks of sympathy. These networks traverse the inner self, the external other, society, the world and the cosmos, and are operated by the dynamic process of meta-communication. Smith’s The Theory of Moral Sentiments embodies the wisdom of aesthetic observance and sympathy, and gracefully teaches us how to pursue our authentic happiness in an arrogant and snobbish world filled with its narrowness and superficiality of thought while maintaining our substantial self-composure without being swayed by external environmental changes. In this sense, Smith’s book is deservedly recognized as a great textbook on spiritual intelligence.
