국민 탄생의 역사와 안중근

국문 초록

안중근은 옥중에서 쓴 유묵에 쓴 시기와 장소 및 쓴 사람을 밝혔다. 즉 “경자년 (1910) 2월(또는 3월) 뤼순 옥중에서 대한국인 안중근이 쓰다”라는 문구를 모든 유묵에 다 써서 남겼다. 이는 한국 서예 역사에서 유일한 예인데도 이를 주목한 연구는 없었다. ‘대한국인’이란 국적 표시가 그의 치열한 애국심의 발로로 간주하는 데 그쳤다. 안중근은 1879년생이다. 그가 15, 6세 되던 1894, 5년에 조선은 청일전쟁을 겪는 가운데 이를 극복하기 위해 근대적인 국민 창출의 역사가 시작되었다. 1895년 2월 2일에 내려진 ｢교육조령｣은 덕양, 체양, 지양의 3양(養) 교육을 강령으로 내세웠다. 군주는 오직 신민(臣民)만이 나라의 분개를 풀어주고, 나라의 모욕을 막고, 국가의 정치제도를 닦아나갈 사람이라고 하여 신민의 교육 기회 마련은 곧 나라를 튼튼하게 하는 길이라고 하였다. 근대적 국민 창출을 위한 조정의 모든 조치는 국한문 혼용체로 조서(詔書)를 작성하는 특징을 보였고, 1896년에 정부 지원으로 순 한글 『독닙신문』이 창간된 것도 그 연장 선상에 있었다. 안중근의 자서전 ｢안응칠 역사｣에는 이런 시대 조류가 그대로 나타나 있을뿐더러 그는 군주 고종이 추진한 국민 창출 역사의 최우등생으로 평가해도 좋을 만큼 투철한 국민의식 및 국민의무 의식을 가졌다. 그는 진남포에서 교육운동에 종사하였고, 1907년 국민의무 운동으로 전국적으로 일어난 국채보상운동 때 평양지역 책임자였다. 광무제 고종이 강제로 퇴위당하자 블라디보스토크에 본부를 둔 대한의군에 투신하여 국권 탈취의 원흉 이토 히로부미를 처단하는 의거에 앞장선 것은 이런 투철한 국민의식의 발로였다. 그는 옥중에서 쓴 유묵 50여 점 가운데 대한제국 국가 원수 광무제(光武帝) 고종에게 하직의 뜻을 담은 유목 3점을 남기기도 하였다.

영문 초록

In all the calligraphic works Ahn Jung-geun produced in prison, he clearly recorded the time, place, and author of his calligraphic works. In other words, he added to all his calligraphic works the sentence In February (or March) of the gyeongja year (1910), Ahn Jung-geun, a national of Great Korea, wrote in the Lushun prison. Although adding such a sentence is unparalleled in the history of Korean calligraphy, no study has been devoted to examining this fact. The mention of a national of Great Korea (Daehanguk in) has merely been regarded as an indication of his fervent patriotism. Ahn Jung-geun was born in 1879. In 1894-95, when he was 15 and 16 years of age, Joseon underwent the First Sino-Japanese War on its own soil. In order to overcome this tragedy, the making of a modern nation was set in motion. The Education Decree, issued on February 2, 1895, put forward the cultivation of three areas-cultivation of virtue (deokyang), cultivation of physical body (cheyang), and cultivation of intellect (jiyang)-as the main principle of education. In the Decree, the Korean monarch stated that only the subjects (sinmin) could resist the enemy of the state, prevent humiliation to the state, and carry on the political system of the state and that providing educational opportunities for the subjects was critical to strengthening the country. All the policy measures aimed at creating a modern nation were written in a script that used both Korean letters and Chinese characters. Tongnip Sinmun, a Korean-only newspaper, was founded in 1896 with government support, and this was also in line with this direction. Ahn Jung-geun s autobiography, History of Ahn Eung-chil, also demonstrates the trend of this era. He possessed a strong sense of identity and duty as a Korean national, to the extent that he may be regarded as a supreme example in the making of a modern nation pursued by the monarch Gojong. He engaged in the education movement in Jinnampo and was in charge of the Pyongyang area during the 1907 National Debt Redemption Movement, a nationwide movement driven by an intense sense of national duty. It was this strong sense of national identity that enabled him to enlist in the Vladivostok-based Korean Righteous Army and carry out the execution of Ito Hirobumi, the chief culprit in Japan s usurpation of Korea s national sovereignty. Of fifty-odd calligraphic works he produced in prison, Ahn Jung-geun also left three calligraphic writings as farewell notes to Gwangmu Emperor Gojong, the head of the Korean Empire.
