황윤석의 <이재만록> 연구

국문 초록

본고는 18세기 호남 지식인인 頤齋 黃胤錫(1729~1791)의 <漫錄>에 표출된 서얼 차별에 대한 인식과 의미에 대해 논한 글이다. 황윤석은 평생동안 방대한 분량의 일기인 『頤齋亂藁』를 저술하였다. 훗날 이재난고 는 재편집되어 『頤齋亂藁』와 『頤齋亂藁』로 간행된다. <만록>은 이재속고 에 수록되어 있는데, 손 가는 대로 기록한 것이라는 의미와는 달리 단순한 기록에 그치지 않는다. 황윤석의 박학 고증적인 학문 성향이 여실히 드러나면서, 정치와 시국에 대한 견해로부터 사회 현상 및 역사에 대한 관점에 이르기까지 다양한 주제의식을 담고 있다. 특히 서얼의 연원에서 시작하여 금고와 허통에 관한 시대별 전개 양상 및 적서 차별의 원인 등에 관한 의견을 두루 피력하였다. 이러한 기록은 단일항목으로는 가장 많은 비중을 할애하여 비상한 관심을 표출한 반면 그 현실적 대응 방안을 모색하는 데는 소극적이다. 서얼만큼 호남 차별에 대한 항목이 많은데, 호남 차별의 실상을 서술하면서 억울함과 울분을 토로하긴 하되, 이 또한 현실적이고 적극적인 방책 대신 군주나 위정자의 ‘立賢無方’을 촉구한다. 황윤석은 십여 년간 관직 생활을 하면서 지역 차별을 몸소 체험하였지만 호남의 한미한 가문 출신인 그로서는 이에 대해 적극적으로 대응하기가 쉽지 않다. 대신 그는 국가를 위해 뛰어난 인재를 등용하라고 외친다. 신분적 한계와 지역적 연고에 얽매이지 않고 역량을 가진 이라면 누구나 발신의 기회를 주어야 한다고 거듭 외칠 뿐이다. 이러한 연유로 황윤석은 서얼 차별에 대해 누구보다 많은 관심을 가지고 기록으로 남겼으니, 이 문제는 호남지식인인 그의 정체성과 긴밀하게 연동되기 때문이다.

영문 초록

This paper discusses on recognition and meanings of discrimination toward seo-eol depicted in Manrok of Late Choson Honam scholar Ijae Hwang Yoon-seok(1729~1791). Hwang wrote diary since 10 until 3 days before he passed away, which is Ijaenango. Later his descendant rearranged it and published Ijaeyugo and Ijaesokgo. Manrok is included in Ijaesokgo, and it is not just a record though its name means ‘written as hand moves’. It is filled with Hwang’s erudite and testifying attitude of study, and contains various subject matter from his opinion on political situations to perspective on social phenomenon or history. Especially he had large interest on seo-eol, as he wrote from origin of seo-eol, difference of formal-house and private-house, periodic development of seo-eol imprisonment and liberation, with reason and aspect of discrimination between legit and side bloodline. However his reaction was quite defensive toward searching realistic countermeasure as he concluded that circumstances made it inevitable. This can be understood by relating it with his character, for Honam region faced discrimination too. He wrote about reality of Honam discrimination and depressive sentiment caused by this as much as about seo-eol. However he also does not seek for realistic or active plan but urge for monarch or policemakers to ‘appoint wise without unfairness’. Hwang Yoon-seok is from Honam’s humble household, and in his 10-year experience of officer in Hanyang he faced discriminations so it would be hard for him to express active countermeasure. He however cries for fair and vast opportunity of appointments which will allow talented scholars to work for country, without any restriction caused by social hierachy or regional background. For this reason Hwang Yoon-seok left records of discrimination toward seo-eol and imprisonment of them, as he had abnormal interest on this problem which is strongly correlated with his identity.
