조선 사신 김정익 筆下의 중국 이미지 연구

국문 초록

『北征日記』는 조선 사신 金貞益이 1841년에 청나라에 사행하頁서 견문과 체험을 상세히 기록한 일기이다. 개인적인 의지와 취향, 物儘其用, 실사구시 등 실학사상과 ‘小中華’ 이데올리기, 앞사람이 기록한 『연행록』 등 요소는 김정익이 중국을 관찰하는 독특한 시각을 형성하는 데 영향을 미쳤다. 본고에서에서는 비교문학이미지학(comparative literature imagology) 연구방법을 활용하여 김정익이 바라본 중국의 이미지를 분석하고, 이를 통해 19세기 40년대 조선 문인들의 중국에 대한 인식과 이 시기 조선 문인의 사상 특징을 파악하고자 한다. 비록 김정익은 그 당시 청나라 사회에 사치를 숭배하는 풍조에 대해 부정적인 중국 이미지를 형상화했으나 전반적으로 봤을 때 긍정적인 중국 이미지를 부각했다고 할 수 있다. 특히 『북정일기』는 앞사람들이 작성한 전형적인 연행기록의 영향을 받았지만 그대로 옮겨놓은 것이 아니라, 오히려 해독하고 검증하고 교정하는 창작 특징을 보였으며, 이런 신중한 학문적 태도는 조선 후기 실학파가 제창하는 실사구시의 사상적 특징을 반영하기도 했다.그리고 아편전쟁의 발발은 김정익이 중국에 대한 인지에 큰 영향을 미치지 못했다. 사실상, 청나라와 서양 국가들 간 국가실력의 차이, 아편전쟁의 위해성, 심지어 청나라를 침략한 서양 국가들의 이미지 등 측頁은, 북정일기 에 어느 정도 단편적이고 오독한 문제도 존재한다. 이러한 문제는 1840년대 이후 조선 사신들이 작성한 연행록 에서도 보편적 존재하는 것으로서 『북정일기』만이 존재하는 문제가 아니다. 김정익 자신의 정치적 각성 등 주관적 요소 외, 사행 노선이 아편전쟁이 발생한 전쟁터를 멀리하든지, 접촉한 청나라 관리들이 한계가 있든지, 교류대상인 청나라 벼슬의 직급이 높지 않든지, 정보 수집이 늦든지 등은 이상 문제를 초래한 객관적 요소로 볼 수 있다. 하지만 김정익의 중국에 대한 인지와 중국 이미지의 형상화는 오히려 시대성을 반영했다고 할 수 있다. 타자에 대해 이야기하는 것은 동시에 자아에 대해 이야기하는 것이다. 김정익은 긍정적인 중국 이미지와 부정적인 중국 이미지에 대한 형성화를 통해, 그 당시 조선왕조의 국정에 대한 사고를 내비쳤으며, 또한 군주에 대한 勵精圖治와 節儉執政 등 간절한 바람을 표출하기도 했고 조선 사대부의 책임감과 사명감을 표현했다고도 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The Diary of the Northern Expedition records in detail the experiences of Joseon envoy Kim Jungik during his mission to the Qing Dynasty in 1841. His personal interests, practical thoughts such as making the best use of things and seeking truth from facts, the consciousness of “Little China” and the records of his predecessors trip to Yan Capital contributed to his unique perspective of observing China. With the research method of comparative literature images, this paper analyzes the image of China constructed by Kim to explore Joseon literati s cognition of China in 1840s and the ideological characteristics of Joseon literati in this period. Although the author criticizes the negative social phenomena of Qing Dynasty, such as waste, but he intentionally focuses on creating a positive image of China. The Diary of the Northern Expedition is not a copy of the exemplary records of the predecessors’ trip to Yan capital, it shows the creative characteristics of interpreting, confirming and correcting the records of Yan image illustrated by the other writers. The rigorous perspective of the diary reflects the ideological characteristics of seeking truth from facts advocated by the practical school in the later period of Joseon. The outbreak of the Opium War had little influence on Kim s cognition of China. In fact, there are some problems such as one-sided description and misreading about the inferiority of the comprehensive strength comparison between the Qing Dynasty and the western countries, the harmfulness of the Opium War, and even the image of the western countries invading the Qing Dynasty. The Diary of the Northern Expedition is not an exception. In addition to the subjective factors such as the author s own political consciousness, the objective factors leading to these problems include the fact that the route was far away from the Opium War battlefield, the limited number of Qing Dynasty officials contacted, the low level of Qing Dynasty officials exchanged, and the untimely acquisition of information. Kim’s cognition and image of China just reflect the characteristics of the times. The depiction of a foreign country image reflects the cognition of own image. By creating positive and negative images of China, the author expresses his desire for the king of Joseon to arouse all the effort to make the country prosperous.
