국문 초록

본 소고는 갈라디아서에서 바울이 표현하는 감정을 고전 수사학의 증명 방법인 파토스(pathos)를 중심으로 살펴본다. 파토스는 화자가 청자의 감정을 자극하여 자신의 주장을 증명하는 방법이다. 바울이 파토스의 증명을 펼치는 수사적 상황은 다른 복음으로 돌아선 갈라디아 성도들에게 바울의 복음을 변증하여 그들을 다시 바울의 복음으로 돌려세워야 하는 위기 상황이다. 복음을 변호하기 위하여 바울은 서론부터 결론에 이르기까지 다양한 감정을 필요한 수사적 목적에 따라 표출한다. 주장을 시작하는 서론(1:6-10)에선 바울은 청자들의 호의적 감정을 얻는 것에 집중한다. 그리고 갈라디아 교회가 다른 복음을 따라가는 행위는 바울에게 모욕이었음을 드러내며 갈라디아 성도들의 동감을 얻고자 한다. 사건의 사실과 배경을 이야기하는 진술(1:12-2:14)에서 바울은 거짓 복음으로 돌아선 갈라디아 성도들의 부끄러움을 자극한다. 주장을 증명하는(3:1-5:6) 부분에서 바울은 갈라디아 교인들이 적대자들에게 화를 일으키어(3:1-5) 바울과 같이 거짓 복음을 선동하는 자들을 반대하도록 유도한다. 그리고 4장 12-20절에서 바울은 자신과 갈라디아 교회 사이에 맺어진 사랑을 상기하여 갈라디아 교회와의 관계를 회복하고자 한다. 5-6장의의 권고 부분에서 사랑의 파토스는 갈라디아 성도들이 추구해야 할 윤리적이고 실천적인 목표가 된다. 바울은 복음을 증명하고 율법의 완성을 이룰 수있는 구체적인 사랑의 행위들을 권고한다. 사랑은 바울의 파토스에서 가장 중요한 감정으로 갈라디아 교회의 사랑 실천은 궁극적으로 그리스도의 은혜를 전하는 바울의 복음을 증명할 것이다. 파토스를 통한 바울의 감정을 추적할 때 바울과 갈라디아 교회 사이에 신학적인 이해 관계뿐 아니라 감정의 소통과 공감이 일어났음을 확인할 수 있다. 파토스는 바울과 공동체 간 감정의 의사소통이 어떤 메시지를 만들어 내었는지 추적할 수 있는 길을 제시한다.

영문 초록

Paul’s letters would be written in the context of rhetoric. So the letter should be considered in terms of rhetorical features to persuade the audience. Paul uses various proofs to develop his argument and prove his topic. One of the proofs is pathos which uses the emotion of the audience in the discourse. Galatians has pathos with different kinds of proofs. So I will survey what kinds of emotions Paul uses, and how and for what he uses those emotions. The purpose of Galatians is for the apology of Paul’s Gospel to the Galatians. In order to present his Gospel, Paul uses different emotions from prescript to postscript. According to Paul’s intention through whole parts in Galatians, he, as orator, provokes goodwill, shame, anger, and love. In exordium (1:6-10) for the attention and favor of the Galatians as the audience, Paul arouses the goodwill or sympathy. In the narratio (1:12-2:14) for the information of the fact and background, Paul arouses shame to make them know their misdeeds. In the probatio (3:1-5:6) for the argument, he evokes anger to make the Galatians turn against his opponents and their gospel. Paul also arouses love to create a mood of acceptance regarding Paul and his gospel. In the exhortatio (5:7-6:10), Paul brings love in to convince the Galatia community to change their behaviour and make them follow Paul’s gospel. Finally, pathos is used to convince listeners that Paul’s gospel is right and the gospel of Paul’s opponents is wrong. The change of pathos in Galatians makes it obvious that pathos as the proof is not incidental but invented for his argument. In particular, to realize pathos in his argument, Paul ignites that emotion in his mind before writing or performing the letter. In this process, Paul and the Galatians can share the same emotions. The sharing of emotions can be not only the exchange of the emotions but also the communication which makes the message.
