이우정의 기독교 여성 운동과 사회 활동

국문 초록

본 연구는 평생에 걸쳐 한국의 여성 운동과 민주화 운동, 그리고 평화 운동을 위해 매진했던 이우정의 활동과 사상에 대해 살펴보았다. 이우정은 어린 시절 유교 질서 하의 아버지의 가정 교육과 여성에 대한 차별 의식을 가정에서 체험하면서 여성의 인권 의식이 형성되고 발전해 나가게 되었다. 이우정은 기독교를 접하면서 기독교가 식민 지배에서 민족을 구원하고, 남녀평등한 종교라는 사실을 깨달았으며, 해방 후 신학교에 들어가기로 결심하였다. 1960년대 세계 교회의 ‘하나님의 선교신학’의 영향을 받은 한국 신학자들은 크리스챤아카데미와 기독자교수협의회를 중심으로 교회의 사회 참여에 대한 활발한 토론을 벌였다. 교수였던 이우정은 김재준, 박형규, 안병무 등과 교류하며 교회와 사회가 나아갈 길을 모색했다. 이우정은 성경의 내용에 근거하여 남편과 아내가 서로 존중하는 것이 하나님의 창조 원리라고 이해하였으며, 하나님의 창조 질서에 순응함으로써 참된 남녀동등이 있음을 강조하였다. 1970년대 이우정은 여성 단체에서의 활동을 통해 여성이 남성에 비해 가정과 직장에서 차별을 받고 있음을 강조하였으며, 여성들이 사명감을 가지고 사회 참여에 공헌할 것을 촉구하였다. 이후 그는 인권을 천부 인권설의 관점에서 해석하면서 한국의 문화 속에 여성은 여성의 비인간화가 이뤄졌음을 설명하였으며, 이에 대한 개선이 필요함을 설득하였다. 1980년대 접어들면서 이우정은 교회 여성 운동이 역사와 사회 의식이 부재함을 지적하였다. 또한 그는 가정과 교회의 민주화가 이뤄져야 하고 이를 위해 국제 연대까지도 필요하다고 보았으며, 더 나아가 생명 존중, 평화 운동에도 교회 여성들의 동참을 호소하였다. 그가 생각한 평화는 단순히 폭력과 전쟁에 대한 반대뿐만이 아니라, 인간관계에 있어서 모든 형태의 불평등, 불의를 해결해 나가는 적극적 의미의 평화를 의미하였다.

영문 초록

This study examines the activities and thoughts of Lee Woo-Jung, who worked hard for the women’s movement, democracy movement, and peace movement in Korea throughout her life. Lee Woo-Jung was raised in a patriarchal home which took a lowly view of women, viewing them as children according to Confucian teachings. During this time her consciousness of women’s rights was formed and developed. This consciousness convinced her to enter seminary. In the 1960s, Korean theologians, who were influenced by the world church’s “mission theology of God”, had an active discussion about the church’s participation in social issues. These discussions were centered in the Christian Academy and the Christian Faculty Council. Lee Woo-Jung, who was a professor, found a way forward for the church and society by interacting with Kim Jae-Jun, Park Hyeong-Gyu, and Ahn Byung-Mu. Based on the content of the Bible, Lee Woo-Jung understood that it is God’s creation principle that husband and wife respect each other, and emphasized that there is true equality between men and women by obeying God’s order of creation. In the 1970s, Lee Woo-Jung emphasized that women were being discriminated against at home and at work. Through activities in women’s organizations she urged women to contribute to society with a sense of duty. Afterwards, she interpreted human rights from a religious point of view, explaining that women were dehumanized in Korean culture, and argued that improvement was needed. In the 1980s, Lee Woo-Jung pointed out that the church women’s movement lacked a sense of history and society. In addition, she saw that the democratization of the family and the church should be achieved, and that international solidarity was necessary for this. Furthermore, she appealed for the participation of church women in the movement for respect for life and peace. She thought that peace meant not only opposition to violence and war, but also peace in the active meaning of resolving all forms of inequality and injustice in human relationships.
