아미쉬의 신앙과 삶이 현대에 주는 메시지

국문 초록

본 연구는 아미쉬의 신앙과 실천적 삶이 인공지능시대를 살아가는 크리스천들에게 던져 줄 메시지를 찾고자 하여 문헌연구, 방문과 관찰, 생활경험, 인터뷰, 방문기 등을 토대로 이루어졌다. 아미쉬는 재세례파 분파의 하나로서 예수의 가르침을 따라 살아가며 믿음을 실천하는 종교적 공동체이다. 아미쉬는 정부와 교회분리, 성인침례, 무저항 평화주의를 신앙의 핵심가치로 여긴다. 그들은 유럽의 종교적 ․ 사회적 제도를 파괴하는 반사회적 위험 집단으로 인식되어 고문, 추방, 사형 등 혹독한 박해를받았다. 그러나 그들은 신앙적 신념을 굽히지 않고 박해를 피해 흩어져살았다. 최첨단의 21세기에 살면서도 18세기 삶을 고집하며 살아가고있는 아미쉬들은 빠르고 새롭고 편리한 것이 반드시 좋은 것만은 아니라는 것을 신앙의 실천적 삶을 통해 보여주고 있다. 이들이 인공지능시대를 살아가는 우리들에게 주는 메시지는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 현대 사회의 개인과 가족에게 주는 메시지이다. 가정교육 부재가심각한 시대, 고3병에 시달려 가족과 사촌들과 친지도 모르고 공부만 하는 시대에 아미쉬의 신앙은 우리에게 개인의 존엄성과 가족의 귀중함을깨닫게 한다. 둘째, 한계와 분리가 주는 메시지이다. 아미쉬 사람들은 자신들의 신앙을 지키기 위해 꼭 필요한 만큼만 물질문명을 받아들이는 확실한 자기정체성을 가지고 한계를 정함으로 순결한 신앙생활을 유지해 오고 있다. 이런 면에서 그리스도인들은 모든 것을 다 할 수 있으나 스스로의 한계를정하고 물질만능 시대에 풍요와 대량소비가 축복이 아니라는 것을 성찰하지 못하면 희망이 없으며 교회는 또 다른 하나의 이익집단으로 전락할수 있음을 보여준다. 셋째, 무저항 평화주의가 주는 메시지이다. 혹독한 박해를 받으면서도가족과 공동체 사람들과는 물론 바깥세상의 이웃과 지구상의 모든 인류에게 관대한 사랑을 베풀며 살아가는 박애, 평화주의를 추구하고 있다넷째, 공동체적 삶과 예배가 주는 메시지이다. 아미쉬는 인간만이 공동체가 아니라 자연과 동식물, 땅도 모두 함께 공동체라는 생각을 가지고편안함과 안락함, 물질과 풍요로움의 늪에서 빠져나와 서로를 돌아보는하나님의 공동체로 살아가고 있다. 다섯째, 자연친화적 삶이 주는 메시지이다. 자연친화적 직업을 통해 엄격한 노동 윤리, 인내, 단순함을 배우며 인간과 자연뿐 아니라 이 세상에있는 모든 것들이 병들어 아파하고 신음하는 이 사회에서 하나님이 만드신 창조물 모두가 조화로운 삶을 살 수 있음을 보여준다. 여섯째, 그들의 교육이 주는 메시지이다. 청소년들이 자신의 삶을 충분히 생각하고 선택하여 책임질 수 있는 시간과 기회를 주고 교육의 목표는다른 사람을 배려하는 것이며 이것이 행복의 지름길이라는 것을 보여주고 있다.

영문 초록

The Amish are one of the protestant denominations in the Anabaptist church who fellow Jesus’s discipline and live their lives by the faith. Amish core values are separation of government and church, adult baptism by immersion, and non-resistance pacifism. They are known as re-baptizers because they insist on adult baptism. Historically, they were often tortured, expelled, and executed by radical reformers who sought to destroy religious value and social systems in Europe. Nevertheless, they spread out to various places in small group or in families to find their religious freedom. Amish communities shows that the fast and comfortable lifestyle of the 21st century life style slow and simple life style are not necessarily better than the slow and simple life style within which one can live out their faith. The messages we can take from the Amish life styles are: The individual and the community within modern society. In the era of the absence of home education and career focused studies, the Amish, make us recognize the dignity of the individual and the preciousness of family. Second, the message of limitation and separation. The Amish maintain their purity of faith by accepting material civilization only as is required and protecting their faith. From this point of view, Christians can do everything but must limited themselves from material affluence and mass consumption. Otherwise, the Church can loose its way and merely become a special interest group. Third, the message of non-resistance. Even as they got severely tortured, the Amish pursued and practiced pacifism and love for all people in the world. Forth, the message of communal life and worship. The Amish concept of community is not only for human being but also for nature, animals and plants. Also they are trying to take care of each other and live as a community of God. Fifth, the message of nature friendly attitude in life. Through nature friendly attitude in life, they show us that everything in the world is created by God and must live in harmony. Furthermore, we need to learn work ethics, patience and simple concepts through natural friendship. Sixth, the message of their education. Their goal of education is that it gives time and opportunities to young people to think through their lives and make choices by their own and take responsibilities for their life.
