신무신론의 현상과 종교성에 관한 기독교교육적 고찰

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 신무신론의 현상과 종교성에 관한 기독교교육적 고찰이다. 무신론의 새로운 가시성, 무신론자들과 세속적 인본주의자들의 연대로 이루어지는 소수자 포지셔닝과 정체성 정치를 통한 권리 주장 및 미디어를 통한 조직적인 아웃리치는 주목해야 할 현상이다. 무신론의 종교성을 논하기 위한 배경으로서 세 가지 관련 사례가 제시되었다. 무신론도 유신론에 대한 단순한 부정 이상의 긍정적인 일련의 신념 체계를 포함하고 있으므로 종교교육에 포함되어야 한다는 왓슨의 주장과, 보통과 꽁트의 보편 종교 혹은 무신론자를 위한 종교연구, 그리고 샘 해리스의 종교 없는 영성 추구에 관해 살펴보았다. 본 연구가 밝히는 무신론의 종교성의 특성은 세속적 인본주의와 절충적 혼합주의, 그리고 유신론에서 빌려온 전제 위에 세워진 반유신론적 신앙이다. 그 핵심에는 창조와 신관의 왜곡, 인간의 자율성과 창조주에 의해 피조된 인격성에 대한 오해가 있다. 그러나 기독교교육적 관점에서 개인의 선택과 자율성을 바탕으로 교리를 제외한 종교의 긍정적이고 합리적인 요소들을 추출해서 만든 무신론자들을 위한 종교를 만들고 세속 사회를 위한 질서와 도덕의 토대를 제공하고자 하는 무신론자들의 인본주의적이고 절충주의적인 시도는 성공적일 수 없다. 최근 젊은 계층 내 종교없음 인구의 증가와 더불어 무신론의 가시화와 조직화에 대응하는 선교적 ․ 문화적 기독교교육 컨텐츠 개발이 필요하다. 더불어서 무신론의 비판이 참된 신이 아닌 우상에 관한 것이요, 왜곡된 신관과 그 함의에 대한 오해에서 비롯되었다는 점에서 바른 신학과 실천을 삶으로 구현하는 성도를 양성이 필요하다.

영문 초록

This study concerns the recent phenomena of New Atheism and a growing population of convinced atheists and so-called ‘religious nones’ in Korea and across countries. The focus of this study is to examine and identify the religious nature of atheism and the activities of atheists, and to suggest educational tasks concerning this issue. This paper defines the religious nature of atheism in terms of secular humanism, the individualistic pursuit of spirituality and religion of instrumental syncretism, and rebellious religiosity with ‘the anti-God act of faith’ upon borrowed premises from Christian theism. At the core of atheism is a distorted understanding of God, creation, and human autonomy. The new visibility of atheism, their aggressive rhetoric and attitudes, and their organized activities for their right and identity as atheists and for proselytizing religious nones and elites should be taken seriously. Several tasks for Christian educators upon this issue are suggested. Atheism calls for both individual and collective critical reflection of Christians upon their images of God, and whether they have been affected by human sinfulness from which human beings make gods/idols after their dreams and expectations, personal experience, and secular meta-narratives within society. Churches should teach the whole counsel of God and Christian education programs should be designed and implemented upon sound theology. Orthopraxy as well as orthodoxy of Christians may provide a ground for apologetics toward atheists.
