교사의 다문화 역량과 탈북청소년 대상 기독교대안교육

국문 초록

본 연구는 탈북청소년 대상 교육을 담당하는 기독교대안학교 교사진의 다문화 역량을 점검하고, 이를 제고할 방안을 제시하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 기독교대안학교 3개교의 교사 12명을 대상으로 반구조화된(semi-structured) 질문을 이용한 심층면접을 진행하였고, 질적분석 프로그램인 NVivo11을 사용하여 심층면접의 내용을 분석하였다. 탈북청소년 대상 기독교 대안학교에 근무하는 교사들은 신앙에 기초한 사랑과 긍휼의 정신이 교사로서의 사명과 연계되는 모습을 보였다. 교사들은 탈북청소년들이 겪는 적응과정의 어려움과 탈북과정에서 발생한 교육결손으로 인한 학습장애 요인들에 대한 파악을 기반으로 그들이 장기적인 관점에서 사회적응뿐만 아니라 통일시대를 선도하는 일꾼으로 성장할 수 있도록 사랑과 헌신의 교육을 수행하고 있었다. 이는 탈북청소년 대상 교육이 가정의 돌봄의 기능까지 제공하는 포괄적인 성격을 지님을 드러내며, 성별과 연령, 출신지역 및 탈북경로 등에 따른 탈북청소년 집단 내부의 다양성을 반영한 맞춤식 교육과정의 운영 또한 교사들이 견지하는 기독교적 사랑에 기반하고 있었다. 교사진의 그러한 인식과 교육실천은 그들이 남한의 공교육을 받는 다수의 학생들과 탈북청소년이라는 소수집단 사이에서 상호이해와 반편견, 그리고 평등을 강조하는 다문화 역량을 발휘하고 있음을 드러낸다. 남한의 북한이해를 증진시키고, 통일 이후에 남과 북을 모두 이해하는 전문가로서 사회통합을 이루어낼 수 있는 탈북청소년 교육의 중요성을 고려할 때, 탈북청소년 대상으로 특화된 교육과정 및 교수학습법, 교원 양성의 수단에 대하여 본 연구는 무엇보다도 탈북청소년 대상 교육에 대한 인식제고 및 재정확충을 통해 장기적 관점에서 교육이 이루어져야 함을 강조하며, 교사에 대한 지원 역시 탈북청소년 교육에 대한 인식제고와 더불어 장기적 관점에서 이루어져야 함을 제안한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to examine the multicultural competence of teachers at Christian alternative schools that ed-ucate North Korean adolescent refugees, and to propose ways to enhance their education. In pursuit of this goal, the study en-gaged in qualitative research and conducted in-depth inter-views with 12 teachers who work for Christian alternative schools with more than one year of experience with North Korean adolescent refugee students’ education. The study ana-lyzed the perceived identity of alternative school teachers, their understanding of the needs of North Korean adolescent refu-gees, the multicultural competence of teachers in terms of cur-riculum and teaching methodology, and suggestions for speci-alized education for teachers. The findings indicate that teach-ers’ identities as Christians who seek to love and take care of people in need is closely related to their educational ability with regards to North Korean refugee adolescent students in the fol-lowing ways: Teachers at Christian alternative schools under-stand the suffering experiences of their students, their specific educational needs based on the diverse background of the stu-dent body, and provide them with a hospitable learning envi-ronment as not only teachers but also as pseudo-parents. Teachers in this study also understand the importance of edu-cation for North Korean refugee adolescents from the long-term viewpoint since they have experiences with both South and North Koreans and thus will be an asset for the uni-fication of Korea. This study suggests raising awareness for the importance of education for both teachers and North Korean adolescent refugees and claims that integrated support for them should be continued.
