국문 초록

이 연구는 16세기 제네바에서 종교개혁을 이끌었던 마리 당티에르의 여성교육론을 밝히는데 있다. 일반인들에게 종교개혁과 연관되는 인물들은 대부분 남성들이다. 그러나 종교개혁을 이끌었던 인물에는 많은 여성들이 있었고, 누구보다도 과감하고 열정적인 인물이 당티에르였다. 그녀의 종교개혁 사상에 대한 정확한 이해와 작품 활동과 설교를 할 여성의 권리에 대한 논리적인 반박은 그녀를 많은 남성 종교인들로부터 공격을 받게 만드는 결과로 이어졌다. 그녀는 종교개혁을 통해서 여성들의 역할이 더 광범위해지고 문학 활동이나 교회에서 가르치는 활동에 대한 권리가 높아질 것이라 생각했다. 그러나 프로테스탄트는 가정의 중요성을 강조하면서 가정에서 여성의 역할을 강조하게 되고 결과적으로 여성의 사회적 활동을 제한하는 결과를 가져왔다. 그녀는 가톨릭교회의 사제들과 제네바에서 함께 활동한 종교개혁가인 칼뱅이나 파렐로부터 비판의 대상이 되었다. 여성의 권리를 주장하고 여성의 신학적 능력을 보여준 그녀의 작품인 마가리트 드 나바르 여왕에게 보내는 서신은 출판부터 많은 난항을 겪었다. 대부분의 그녀의 작품이 현재까지 남아있지 않지만 그녀의 몇몇 대표적인 작품을 통해서 그녀가 여성들을 위한 문학교육과 신학교육의 필요성을 주장하고 있음을 밝힐 수 있었다.

영문 초록

In this research, I have explored Marie Dentiere’s educational ideas for women – a female reformer and a writer in the 16th century Geneva. Because she advocated women’s right to preach and to be educated for writing, she was attacked from male theologians, priests, and reformers. She converted from a nun to a reformer who was married twice in order to spread the reformer’s thinking. However, because most reformers emphasized the wife’s role and household, women in 16th century were restricted their social and economic role. Even though she had expected to have more chances to preach and to teach at the public places, the society did not allow her to preach at the public nor write theological books except to read the religious books at her contemporary. Since the rejection of Marie Dentiere’s role as author and preacher would be naturally in the early modern climate, she resisted to admit the rejection of women’s authorship. Therefore, her excellent and valuable works did not survived to these days, except the letter to the Marguerite De Navarre. Her name too have been neglected and disappeared historically. Recently several scholars have researched her church leadership at the perspective of feminism. She had advocated women’s literacy education based on her reformation ideas. Her idea of women’s literacy education was supported from the Bible and reformation’s idea of equality.
