교육의 장으로서의 세례와 세례교육

국문 초록

기독교인이 된다는 것(being a Christian)은 곧, 세례교인이 된다는 것(being a baptized Christian)이고, 세례교인이 되어야만 말씀과 성찬으로 이루어진 온전한 예배에 참여할 자격이 주어지는 것임에도 불구하고, 전투적 선교와 교세 확장을 목적으로 하는 한국의 수많은 교회들에서 세례 예식은 점차 간소화되어 가고 있고, 생의 ‘유일회적 사건’인 세례의 중요성이 제대로 인식되지 못하거나 심지어는 성급히 해치우려는 듯한 인상을 주기도 한다. 박해정은 이러한 모습을 “신앙의 인스턴트화”, “신앙의 캐주얼화”라고 비판하면서, “오늘날 개신교회가 세례의 신학적, 성서적, 역사적 의미를 회복하는 일”이야 말로 “개신교회가 회복해야 할 가장 큰 신앙의 가치”라고 말하고 있다. 본 논문은 교회의 존재 기반이자, 기독교인으로서의 정체성 형성의 출발점인 세례와 세례교육을 교육의 장으로서 새롭게 인식하는 것을 목적으로 삼고 있다. 전통적으로 ‘학습-세례-입교’로 진행되던 세례교육에서 ‘학습’의 기간이 줄어들고, 세례 후 시행되던 ‘입교’교육도 점차 간소화되면서 신앙이 “인스턴트화” 되거나 “캐쥬얼화” 되어가는 한국교회의 상황에 직면하여, 먼저 세례의 의미를 신학적, 교육적 측면에서 되짚어보고, 세례교육의 종교교육적 의미를 살펴보고자 한다. 다음으로는 세례교육의 새로운 모형으로서 만나교회 “어린이 세례캠프 Born Again”을 소개하고자 한다. “세례캠프 Born Again”은 1박 2일간 진행되는 세례교육으로, 이 기간 동안 어린이들에게 세례의 의미를 체험적으로 학습할 수 있는 기회를 제공하고, 세례와 첫 성만찬을 초대교회의 신앙과 진정한 기독교인이 되었음을 깨달을 수 있는 유일회적 사건으로서 경험하도록 하고 있다. “세례캠프” 모형은 성인 위주의 세례교육이 대부분인 한국교회에 신선한 자극과 도전을 줄 것이며, 이것을 교육의 장으로 적극 활용하여 개교회의 실정과 상황에 적합한 세례교육 모형을 만드는 데에도 좋은 본보기가 될 것이다.

영문 초록

To be a Christian is to be baptized. However, baptismal rituals tend to be simper and more convenient in many of the contemporary Korean churches, whose goal has been none other than their ceaseless growth in numbers in terms of active or aggressive mission programs. Nonetheless, a qualification to wholly participate in a Christian worship, which consists of the Word and Sacraments, can be given only by being baptized. As a matter of fact, it is not acknowledged that baptism is an unique and singular event in Christian life, and thus even sincere Christians often regard it as a passing rite. Hae-Jung Park criticizes such a trend of the age as “an instantization of faith” and “casualization of faith”, and, in this vein, he emphasizes “the recovery of the theological, biblical and historical meanings of baptism for Protestant Church today” as “the supreme value that the contemporary Protestant church has to revive.” This article aims at a new Christian acknowledgment of baptism and catechism as fields of education, in which Christian identity is formed for the first time and in terms of which church finds its ground. Traditionally, baptism had consisted of catechism, baptism and initiation, but catechism has been reduced, and initiation has become much simpler. In face of this modern trend of religious life in which our religiosity has instant-ized and casual-ized, this article wants to reflect upon the meaning of baptism and to seek for a religious-educational meaning of catechism. Then, this paper introduces a baptismal program of Manna Methodist Church whose subject title is “Children Baptismal Camp - Born Again.” The program takes a form of camping overnight during which it offers participants a chance to experience the real meaning of baptism by having them participate in their first Eucharist after their baptism. Such a ritualistic surroundings makes the camp experience an unique and singular event for their subsequent lives. This model of “baptismal camp” challenges the common sense of Korean churches whose education model for baptism and catechism has been devised for adult education. This baptismal camp model could be an example that a church develops some models for baptism and catechism pertain to its actuality and context and transforms them into the fields of education.
