워필드는 자기 시대의 신학이 합리주의나 경험주의 및 그 극단인 관념주의나 유물주의에 경도되어, 주관적이고 상대적인 잣대로 성경의 규범성과 역사성을 자의적으로 각색하며, 성경의 절대 가치를 실용적 편향성에 매몰시키는 극한 오류에 빠져 있음을 엄정하게 비판하면서, 이러한 사조에 휩쓸린 ‘자유주의(Liberalism)’에는 ‘그리스도 없는 기독교(Christless Christianity)’가 남을 뿐이라고 단언한다. 그의 논점은 이러하다. 기독교의 본질은 중보자 그리스도의 신인양성의 인격과 그 인격이 주체가 되는 사역, 그리고 그 사역에 따른 대속의 의의 전가에 있다. 이를 도외시하고는 기독론이 서지 못함을 물론 삼위일체론이나 구원론도 서지 못한다. 삼위일체 하나님의 계시의 정점은 그리스도의 성육신에 있으며, 구원론의 핵심은 하나님의아들이 사람의 아들이 되셔서 하나님의 아들이시자 사람의 아들로서 다 이루신 의의 전가의 법정성에 있기 때문이다. 워필드는 이러한 삼위일체론적-기독론적-구원론적 관점을 시종 견지한다. 그 결과 교리의 폭과 함께 변증의 폭이 함께 넓어지고 깊어진다. 중보자 예수 그리스도를 칭하는, “하나님의 아들,” “사람의 아들,” “주”라는 세 이름이 이러한 관점에 부합하게 서로 긴밀하게 자주 언급된다.

영문 초록

Benjamin B. Warfield strictly criticizes a ‘new Christology’ that has been pursued by liberal theologians of his time in various ways, for dramatizing arbitrarily the normative and historic character of the Bible according to their own subjective and relative criteria based on the 19-20th century rationalism or empiricism, and their ultimate types of idealism or materialism, and for making a crucial error to convert absolute value of the Bible to pragmatic bias of contemporary philosophies. Warfield argues that none other than ‘Christless Christianity’ will be left if we are caught up in liberalism. Warfield finds an essence of Christianity in the doctrines of the hypostatic union of Christ the Mediator’s two natures, His works of redemption, and the federal imputation of His righteousness, which was fulfilled on the cross. In dealing with this, Warfield highlights three names of Christ the Mediator, “Son of God,” “Son of Man,” and “Lord,” which correspond to Trinitarianism, Christology, and Soteriology respectively. This is why for Warfield the width and range of sys- tematic theology and apologetics become widen and broaden and their inter- relationship becomes dynamic and intimate each other.
