국문 초록

최근 제임스 에글린턴(James Eglinton)에 의해 헤르만 바빙크 전기(biography)가 새롭게 출간되었다. 이 전기의 부제는 다소 도발적인데 그 이유는 전기 작품의 제목으로는 흔하게 쓰이지 않는 표현인 ‘비평적’(critical)이란 표현이 포함되어 있기 때문이다. 혹자는 이 전기 제목을 오해해서 에글린턴이 바빙크의 생애와 신학을‘비평적으로’ 고찰했다고 단순히 부정적으로 인상 비평할 수 있겠다. 하지만 실상은 전혀 그렇지 않다. 그 이유는 에글린턴 전기의 부제인 비평적 고찰의 대상은 헤르만 바빙크 본인이 아니라, 오히려 기존의 바빙크 전기 작가들과 그들의 작품에 대한 비평이기 때문이다. 결국 에글린턴의 전기는 그가 박사논문을 쓸 때부터 천착했던 해석 원리인 바빙크를 ‘새롭게 읽는’ 작업의 또 다른 일환으로 볼 수 있다. 기존의 바빙크 전기들을 객관적으로 바라본 후 그런 작업의 장단점의 토대 위에서 바빙크의 생애와 신학을 새롭게 재조망하려는 시도가 바로 최근에 출간된 에글린턴의 전기가 지향하는 집필 방향성이다. 본고의 목표는 이런 에글린턴의 Bavinck: A Critical Biography를 또다시 비평적으로 고찰해 보는 것이다. 여기서 말하는 ‘비평적으로 고찰’한다는 의미는 에글린턴의 전기를 객관적으로 분석해 장단점을 도출해내어 과연 어떤 시각이 바빙크의 생애와 신학을 평가함에 있어 보다 더 옳은 시각인가를 고민하는 작업이 포함된 의미이다. 무조건 새롭게 읽는 것보다 더 중요한 것은 ‘옳은 시각’ 하에 새롭게 읽는 것이기 때문이다. 본고의 논지 전개 순서는 다음과 같다. 먼저 에글린턴이 비평의 대상으로 삼고 있는 기존의 바빙크 전기를 역사적으로 분석해본 후, 에글린턴의 A Critical Biography의 핵심 내용들을 분석할 것이다. 특히 에글린턴 전기의 장점과 기여, 단점과 아쉬운 점, 그리고 총평을 내려 볼 것이다. 그 후 바빙크 전기의 향후 방향성 및 신학적·실천적 고찰을 살핀 다음 총 결론을 내리도록 하겠다. 이런 일련의 작업을 통해 어떤 방식으로 ‘전기’라는 옷을 입은 채 바빙크의 생애와 신학을 보다 더 올바르게 고찰할 수 있는지에 대한 진지하고도 의미 있는 논의가 이루어지게 될 것을 확신한다.

영문 초록

The new biography on Herman Bavinck has recently published by James Eglinton. The subtitle of this biography is somewhat provocative, inasmuch as it includes the expression ‘critical’ which is not usually used as the title of biography. As a result of misunderstanding on the subtitle, one would impressionistically criticize that Eglinton views Bavinck’s life and theology in a critical sense. The fact, however, is not. For the object of Eglinton’s criticism is not toward Bavinck himself, but toward the precedent biographers and their works on Bavinck’s life and theology. Eglinton’s biograpy, therefore, is a kind of biographical work, which tries to comprehend Bavinck in a new reading through analyzing the preceding biographies in an objective angle. The purpose of this study is to view Eglinton’s Bavinck: A Critical Biography critically once again. Here, the expression ‘to view critically’ means that, after analyzing Eglinton’s biography and drawing its strengths and weaknesses in on objective outlook, one tries to find which viewpoint is more proper viewpoint to evaluate Bavinck’s life and theology. For the most important thing is not unconditionally leaning toward a new reading, but toward a new reading in a proper perspective. The study follows this order: First, after analyzing the earlier biographies historically, the core idea of Eglinton’s biography will be examined. Second, the advantages and disadvantages of A Critical Biography will be viewed. Lastly, the biography’s future direction, its theological and practical implication will be dealt with.
