도르트 총회 연구의 새로운 전망과 시벨리우스의 일지(Journal)

국문 초록

최초의, 그리고 현재까지 유일한 국제 개혁파 총회였음에도 도르트 총회(1618- 19)는 지금껏 학계의 큰 관심을 끌지 못한 채 그 연구가 매우 제한적이었다. 그 주된 이유 중의 하나는 바로 도르트 총회와 관련된 대부분 일차자료가 그 자체로 비평적인 판독작업이 필요한 자료들이기 때문이다. 그러나 최근 도르트 총회 400주년을 맞이하여 도르트 총회에 관한 관심이 증대되고, 도르트 총회에 관한 연구들이 이전에 비해 활발하게 진행되고 있으며, 무엇보다도 일차자료에 학자들이 더욱 쉽게 접근할 수 있도록 그것들에 대한 비평적인 판독작업이 도르트 프로젝트 그룹에 의해 진행 중이며, Acta et Documenta Synodi Nationalis Dordrechtanae 시리즈의 출간으로 그 노력이 이제 결실을 보고 있다. 이로 인해 새롭게 활용할 수 있게 된 자료들은 도르트 총회에 관한 연구의 지평을 넓혀 주고 있는데, 시벨리우스의 일지도 그런자료 중 하나이다. 시벨리우스의 일지는 도르트 총회에 참석했던 오퍼레이설주 대리인 중 한 명인 카스파르 시벨리우스(Caspar Sibelius)에 의해 기록된 개인 저술로대부분의 총회의 역사를 기술하고 있으며, 다른 자료에서는 발견할 수 없는 독특한 자료들을 포함하고 있기에 도르트 총회 연구에 있어서 매우 중요한 자료로 평가받고 있다. 시벨리우스의 일지는 지금까지 알려지지 않았던 도르트 총회에 관한 여러가지 새로운 면모를 보여주는 훌륭한 보충 자료로서 다른 보충 자료들과 함께 총회의 회의록이 다 담아내지 못한 총회의 다양한 측면을 보여주는 데 유용하게 사용될 것이다.

영문 초록

Although it was the first and, presently, only international Reformed synod, the Synod of Dordt has suffered from undeserved indifference by scholars and the research on it has been quite limited. One of the reasons for this indifference is that most primary sources concerning the Synod of Dordt has remained untouched and needs critical transcription to make them available to scholars. Recently, however, there has been a growing interest in the Synod of Dordt and many scholarly researches on it has been proceeded on account of 400 anniversaries of the Synod of Dordt. In addition, most primary sources have been critically transcribed by the members of Dordt project group, and the result is highlighted by the publication of the Acta et Documenta Synodi Nationalis Dordrechtanae series (9 volumes planned). These newly available sources give better understanding on the Synod of Dordt, and the journal of Sibelius is one of them. The journal was a personal note written by Caspar Sibelius, who was a delegate of the Overijssel delegation, and it contains most records on the history of the Synod and unique materials which other sources do not have. Therefore, the journal of Sibelius is considered as one of the most important complementary sources for the research of the Synod of Dordt. The journal of Sibelius, which has not been available due to its illegibility as other sources, is now available since it is just transcribed. Because the journal of Sibelius contains several unique materials which are not found in any other sources, and they can be also used to show other aspects of the Synod, it is and will be particularly useful for the research of the Synod of Dordt as one of good complementary sources.
