국문 초록

본고는 조선의 19세기 전반을 이른바 ‘세도정치기’로 보는 역사상이 시작 된 시기로서 19세기 말~20세기 초에 주목하고, 이 시기 역사서에 나타난 순조 ~철종대 서술을 검토하여 ‘세도정치기’ 역사상의 구체적인 형성 과정을 밝히 고자 하였다. 19세기 말~20세기 초 역사서에서 순조~철종대는 단독으로 다루 어진 경우는 없고 통사의 일부나 고종대 정치사의 前史로서 서술된다. ‘세도망 국론’으로 요약되는 이 시기에 대한 통념은 19세기 전반의 사료에 기반하여 형 성되었다기보다는 박제경의 『近世朝鮮政鑑』(1886)이나 김택영의 『韓史綮』 (1918)과 같은 극소수의 저작에서 생산되어 조선인·일인 사서를 막론하고 광 범위하게 유통된 것이었다. 이들 도서는 정보 부족과 시각의 편향으로 적지 않 은 오류를 지닌 책들이었음에도 이에 대한 검증없이 후대에 그대로 계승되었 다. 이러한 ‘세도정치기’ 역사 인식은 亡國과 식민지라는 현실 앞에서, 그 원인 을 순조~철종대의 정치에서 찾으려는 19세기 말~20세기 초 역사가들의 반성 적 문제의식에 기반한 것이었다. 그리고 이러한 강렬한 문제의식은 필연적으로 19세기 전반 역사상에 대한 취사선택을 낳았다. 망국과 일제강점기를 겪은 조 선인이 원했던 역사상을 제시하지 못한 『鷄鴨漫錄』과 같은 책들은 역사 인식 의 적자생존에서 패배하여 계승되지 못하고 단절된 것이다.

영문 초록

This thesis examines the narratives of the history of the Sunjo(純祖)~ Chuljong(哲宗)’s reign appearing in the history books of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. From the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, the history of the first half of the 19th century of Joseon began to be considered ‘Sedo Politics(勢道政治)’ Period. In the late 19th~early 20th century history books, there is no case of Sunjo(純祖)~Chuljong(哲宗)’s reign being dealt with alone. This period is explained as a part of General History of Korea or as a pre-history of the political history of the Gojong(高宗) reign. The historical perception of this period was not formed based on the historical records of the first half of the 19th century, but rather the negative view of history created in the few books such as Geunsejoseonjeonggam(近世朝鮮政鑑) and Hansagyeong(韓史綮) was reproduced. Although these books had many errors due to lack of information and biased views, they were handed down from generation to generation without verification. This perception of the history of the ‘Sedo Politics(勢道政治)’ was based on the reflective concerns of historians who tried to find the cause of colonization in the politics of Sunjo(純祖)~Chuljong(哲宗)’s reign. However, such reflective concerns eventually led to an active selection of historical narratives, and this chosen historical perception continued to have an impact even after liberation from colonial rule.
