국문 초록

진보당 사건이 발생한 1950년대는 의회정치의 건강한 대항력이 미처 성숙되 기 이전, 망명정부 시기의 비합법 공간에서부터 체득된 공작과 역공작이 난무 하고, 야만적 정보 공안 시스템이 작동하던 ‘간첩 시대’였다. ‘평화’가 ‘불온’으로 의심받고 추궁당하던 시대, 진보당 사건은 마침내 평화통일에 대한 국민적 염 원이 폭발적으로 분출한 4·19혁명으로 인해 한국 정치사의 새로운 출발을 예비 한 맹아로서, 무수한 공안사건 중에서도 가장 중량감 있는 상징이 되었다. 『진보당 사건기록』(서울지방검찰청, 1958)은 당대 상층 지식인 집단이자 국 민적 기대를 담보했던 정치 그룹이 하루아침에, 그것도 보호 시스템으로서의 사법적 체계가 아니라 국가의 이름으로 행해진 반 헌법적 처분에 의해 단죄받 기까지의 전 과정, 즉 3개월여의 수사기록과 증거자료, 1년간의 재판기록 전체 를 담고 있다. 『진보당 사건기록』은 실증적 증거로서의 가능치를 넘어 사회문화 적 텍스트로서 ‘간첩 시대’를 통과해온 한국 현대사의 한 구간과, 전복된 탈식민 의 득세 아래 고통 받는 시대의 불안을 낱낱이 보여준다. 간첩 사건에 대한 수사 와 공판 기록이지만, 이념의 경계는 모호하고, 정작 드러나는 것은 살아남기 위한 개인과 집단간의 분투와 공포, 그 아래 도사린 은폐된 욕망이다. 식민지와 분 단을 관통해온 한국 현대사에 대한 집단전기학적 접근과 당대 사회문화적 텍스 트로서 『진보당 사건기록』의 재독을 권유하며, 형사재판 기록의 사료적 활용으 로서 미시사적 접근을 제안한다.

영문 초록

The 1950s, marked by the Progressive Party case, was known as the ‘era of espionage’. Before a healthy opposition in the parliamentary government came to fruition, manoeuvres and counter-manoeuvres learned from the illegal space of the government in exile were rampant and a savage information security system was implemented. At a time when ‘peace’ was suspected and questioned as ‘seditious’, the Progressive Party case became the most significant symbol of all public security cases as it planted the seed of a new beginning in Korean political history with the April 19 Revolution that marked the culmination of the national aspirations for peaceful reunification. The Progressive Party Case Records (Seoul District Prosecutors’ Office, 1958) describe the entire process (the three-month investigation and evidence records, and the one-year trial records) whereby the upper-class intellectuals and political groups who embodied national expectations were convicted overnight as a result of anti-constitutional measures taken in the name of the state, rather than a judicial system aiming at protection. Beyond their potential value as empirical evidence, The Progressive Party Case Records are sociocultural texts that uncover a period of modern Korean history marked as the ‘era of espionage’ and reveal the anxiety of an era suffering postcolonial trauma. Although The Progressive Party Case Records concern the investigation and trial of an espionage case, the ideological boundaries are unclear and what they truly reveal is the struggle and fear for survival among individuals and groups, and the hidden desires lying underneath. This paper suggests adopting a prosopographical approach to the modern history of Korea which underwent colonialism and division and re-reading The Progressive Party Case Records as sociocultural texts of the time, and proposes a microhistorical approach for the historical use of criminal trial records.
