신채호와 함석헌

국문 초록

신채호(1880-1936)와 함석헌(1901-1989)은 일제 강점기를 경험했던 동시 대의 지식인으로 한국사 연구를 시도했던 분들이다. 20년 차이를 두고 출생했 던 그들은 직접 접촉한 바가 없지만, 함석헌이 쓴 『성서적 입장에서 본 조선역 사』(이하 『조선역사』)에는 동 시대의 역사가로 신채호의 이름을 유일하게 거론 하고, 역사 인식에서도 신채호와 비슷한 점이 보인다. 그 유사성을 밝혀보려는 것이 이 글의 목적이다. 필자는 함석헌이 『조선역사』를 『성서조선』에 연재할 때(1934-1935), 신채 호의 저술 대부분이 이미 간행되어 식자들에게 열람이 가능했다는 점을 주시 했다. 함석헌은 고려 중기의 ‘묘청(妙淸)의 난’을 설명하면서 신채호가 이 사건 을 두고 ‘조선역사 1천년래(來) 제일대사건’이라고 한 점을 인용했다. 이 논문이 1929년에 출간된 『조선사연구초』라는 책에 실렸던 것으로 보아, 함석헌이 이 무렵 신채호의 이같은 글을 읽고 있었음을 알 수 있다. 신채호의 역사 서술은 주로 한국 고대사에 국한되어 있다. 함석헌의 『조선역 사』중 고대사 부분이 신채호와 겹치는 부분이 더러 보인다. 한국 고대사를 민족 이동설의 관점에서 본 것이나, 단군시대 ‘신지(神誌)’에 대한 인식, 단군 이후의 역사를 ‘열국시대’로 서술한 점 등은 신채호와 함석헌에게서 거의 공통적으로 보이고 있다. 한사군의 인식에서는 차이가 있으나, 삼국시대를 고구려 중심으로 인식한다는 점이 일치한다. 이는 일제 강점하의 독립운동의 기반으로서 고구려 의 대외저항력을 높이 평가했기 때문일 것이다. 신채호는 역사의 삼대원소를 때·땅·사람이라고 했으나 함석헌은 지리적 결 정론에 유의하면서도 섭리사관을 강조했다. 그러나 역사의 주체가 ‘민중’이라는 점에서는 두 사람이 일치한다. 신채호와 함석헌은 그들의 주장과는 달리 한국 사에서 민중을 역사의 주체로 서술하는 데는 성공한 것 같지 않다. 이것은 후일 의 과제다.

영문 초록

Shin Chae-ho(1880-1936) and Ham Sok-hon(1901-1989) were contemporary intellectuals sharing the experience in the period of the forced occupation of Korea by the Japanese imperial regime(1910-1945). Born 20 years apart, they were not in direct contact with each other, yet Shin is the only historian mentioned in Ham s The History of Choseon from the Standpoint of the Sacred Scripture(Bible) and we find in Ham s view of history some similarities with Shin s. This article aims at elucidating those similarities. I noticed the fact that when Ham wrote in serial his The History of Choseon in the journal the Bible and Choseon the most of Shin s writings had already been published, available to intellectuals. In his exposition on the rebellion of Myocheong, Ham quotes Shin s reference to the incident as a prime event of Korean history since one thousand years before. In view of the fact that Shin s article is found in the book Excerpts from the Study of Korean History published in 1929, Ham then apparently read the book. Shin s writings on history is confined mostly to the ancient history of Korea. The part of ancient era in Ham s Korean History is found here and there overlapping with Shin s description. For instance, what are closely common in two historians histories include: seeing the ancient history of Korea based on the theory of migration of the (Korean) nation; understanding about The Divine Chronicle (Shin-ji); describing the history since Tan-gun as the period of various kingdoms. There are disagreements in their views on Han-sagun. Yet they are in agreement in the perception of the three-kingdoms era with Koguryo at the center, perhaps because they highly rated the strength of Koguryo in resisting external powers, which was the foundation of independence movement against the colonialization by imperialist Japan. Shin regarded the period, the territory, and the people as three essential factors of history whereas Ham put emphasis on providence, also bearing in mind the theory of geographical conditions as decisive factors. Yet they are in concord in regarding people(minjung) as the protagonist of history. But Shin and Ham, unlike their arguments, don t seem to have succeeded in applying the view to their historiography of Korea. It remains a task to pursue further.
